Count down to the Prime Time Emmy's - 7 days to go

Today I have a look at the nominations for Best Actor in a Comedy Series:

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series

Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) (TV2)

Ricky Gervais (Derek) (Doesn’t screen in NZ yet, that I am aware at least)

Matt LeBlanc (Episodes) (SOHO)

Don Cheadle (House of Lies) (Four)

Louis C.K. (Louie) (Comedy Central)

William H. Macy (Shameless) (TV2)

Some interesting points to note:

  • Jim Parsons has won Best Comedy Actor three previous times for his role in The Big Bang Theory, (2010, 2011, 2013), also making him the defending champ.
  • If he wins this year, he will tie the record for most wins in this category, along with Carroll O’Connor, Michael J. Fox an Kelsey Gramar.
  • This is Louis C.K’s second nomination for playing a version of himself in the FX show “Louie”.
  • Don Cheadle was also nominated last year in this category and won the Golden Globe last year for Best Comedy Actor.
  • This year’s Golden Globe winner Adam Sandberg was not even nominated in this category.
  • Previously William H. Macy has contested the Best Drama Actor Emmy category for his role on “Shameless” but changed this year to the Best Comedy Actor category.
  • Ricky Gervais has been nominated for 20 Emmy’s (not all for acting) and has won 2.

Notable Snubs:

  • Michael J. Fox and Robin Williams – both their shows got cancelled, but still. The Emmy’s usually love the big names.
  • Andy Samberg is also a major snub since he won the Golden Globe earlier this year.
  • I don’t understand why Melissa McCarthy gets nominated for ‘Mike and Molly’, yet Billy Gardell gets snubbed each year. She is no noticeably better in that show than him.

Who will win:

  • Jim Parsons – anything else would be a huge upset.

Who should win:

  • Jim Parsons – this is not a particular stunning category. I guess the other big US comedy is Modern Family where the male leads all compete in the Best Supporting Actor category.  The other comedy acting performance I enjoyed this year was Chris Meloni in Surviving Jack, but alas, that was cancelled too.

“This year’s Golden Globe winner Adam Sandberg….”

Seriously? Both his first and last name wrong? Quite an achievement haha.
