Count down to the Prime Time Emmy's - 9 days to go

A category with a lot of talent is the Lead Actor in a Drama Series. And the nominees are:

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series –

Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, FOUR)

Kevin Spacey (House of Cards, TV3)

Jon Hamm (Mad Men, SOHO)

Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom, SOHO)

Woody Harrelson (True Detective, SOHO)

Matthew McConaughey (True Detective, SOHO)

Some interesting points to note:

  • Jeff Daniels is the defending champ in this category.
  • Bryan Cranston has won Best Actor in a Drama three previous times for his portrayal of Walter White.
  • If he won this year, he would equal the record for most Best Drama Actor wins.
  • Matthew McConaughey won this years Critics’ Choice TV Award for his role as Rust Cohle in True Detective.
  • Woddy Harrelson has been nominated for seven Emmy’s, and won in 1989 for Comedy Supporting Actor for his role in Cheers.
  • John Hamm has been nominated for 11 Emmy’s, and has won…zero.

Who will win: Matthew McConaughey

With these awards shows, it isn’t always about who has done the best acting in a particular year. It is also about their personal trajectories. For McConaughey, his story of career resurgence from cheesy romantic comedy rubbish to authentic actor has been well documented, and an Emmy for Best Lead Actor would be the cherry on top after his Best Actor win (Dallas Buyers Club) at The Oscars earlier this year. He is also a ‘movie star’, and the Emmy voters are sure to bear that in mind.

Who should win: Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad)

Kevin Spacey knocks it out of the park as Frank Underwood in House of Cards. He is an amazing actor and I love him in this role. McConaughey had the more showier role in True Detective, but he has his Academy Award to keep him happy. However, Bryan Cranston’s portrayal of Walter White is certain to be his most iconic role, and what he will be remembered for. With Breaking Bad at the Emmy’s for the final time, Cranston deserves one last acting trophy for his efforts.

What do you think? Who should win? Who will win? Who was snubbed?
