Choice TV’s new local series, Cook the Books is a show that celebrates cookbooks and their famous authors (starting Thursday 30 October, at 8.30pm on Choice TV).

Hosted by broadcaster Carly Flynn, Cook the Books gives viewers a chance to meet New Zealand’s own celebrity chefs, writers and culinary stars, and see what popular cookbooks are currently available.

Some cookbooks are beautiful to look at; others contain stories as well as recipes; some contain exotic recipes; while others feature simple meals that can be made at home in just a few minutes. Whatever the style, and whatever the motivation for buying them, Kiwis’ are passionate consumers of cookbooks, with many titles sitting on the national best-seller list for months, sometimes years.

Filmed at Auckland’s popular cookbook specialist store in Grey Lynn, also named Cook the Books, this new series promises to be an entertaining and informative half-hour exploring the world of cook books with the chefs, cooks and the foodies who write them.

The series sees Carly head to the Cook the Books kitchen and chat with the likes of Al Brown; Simon Gault; Nadia Lim; Martin Bosley; Robert Oliver; Lauraine Jacobs; Chelsea Winter; and Michael Van de Elzen, to celebrate their life in food and share their recipes and secrets of success.

Carly also leaves the specially designed Mastercraft Kitchens Cook The Books set and travels both north and south of Auckland, to visit some of New Zealand’s finest chefs and cooks, as well as exciting emerging talent, at their home or restaurant.

As a journalist, Carly loves meeting people and sharing inspirational stories. She’s also a fan of great food and is excited about the move to the food and lifestyle arena where she gets to enjoy the company of some of our best and most celebrated chefs. “I’m getting to work with incredibly passionate and talented people, and we’re making and tasting gorgeous fresh food – I have to say it’s a bit of a dream job!”

Episode one sees Al Brown join Carly at the Cook the Books kitchen where he prepares two mouthwatering dishes from his new cookbook, Depot, and a surprise recipe that is an interesting take on a Kiwi favourite. Carly also visits Karla Goodwin at her exquisite suburban cake store Bluebell’s Cakery that has inspired a book of the same name.

Watch Choice TV (Freeview 12 and SKY 026) for episode one of Cook The Books, starting Thursday 30 October at 8.30pm.
