TVNZ cancels Masterchef New Zealand

masterchef-logoIt’s official. Masterchef New Zealand won’t be returning to screens in 2015 as TVNZ have confirmed they have pulled the plug on the cooking series after 5 seasons.

TVNZ’s Head of Television told Throng “After 5 seasons of Masterchef NZ we have chosen not to commission a sixth season.”

“We have chosen instead to commission a new, local multi-night DIY series called Our First Home.”

“We have a very strong line-up of cooking formats across our networks and are keen to introduce a DIY format into the mix.”

On the future of MKRNZ, Latch was a little more coy on the future of the series, saying the broadcaster would review the performance of the series once it has completed its on-air run and decide whether to commission another series.

I am quite honestly shocked! Wow! Masterchef was far more palatable than MKR NZ could ever hope to be. And the concept of yet another building show … hey, I’m all for renovations, but TVNZ is becoming a updated version of the Living Channel.

I heard an interview with Simon Gault recently on the radio; he was saying that with his daughter much of his focus, he doesn’t have time for judging cooking shows anymore … so I did wonder what that meant for his Masterchef gig.

Bad decision. TV3 does DIY shows. One does cooking shows. Stick to what works, very well I might add. MasterChef is the best-rated out of all of them. They are gonna regret this once “Our First Home” inevitably flops.

If TVNZ must do a renovation show, Mitre 10 Dream Home would be better than the rubbish they’re proposing.

MKR NZ is just an embarrassment – as if the ‘Sam and Dan Showdown’ wasn’t cringy enough, the judging panel using plastic cutlery last night topped it off. I hope this isn’t ever sold overseas.

I was embarrassed when I saw that, disgusting. honestly plastic. typical kiwi show.

God that does sound awful. Glad I have never watched any version of MKR before in my life. I’m not sure they’d consider Mitre 10 Dream Home after its reprisal performed poorly… maybe if they brought back Jane Keily? Personally I would love to see My House, My Castle come back. That was a genuinely interesting and informative show and the host was brilliant!

u really think it will flop ? (o.f.h)….it will be on tv 1 so it already has a massive “built in audience” and the premise doesnt sound to bad (kiwi mums and dads helpn the kids into a home) i think it will be a ratings winner…

      • Shannon Ryan

Doesn’t sound like it would work as a multi-night format… sounds more like Extreme Makeover: Home Edition to me.

Geez I hope they reconsider,MKRNZ has nothing on Masterchef

Hurrah, one less reality tv show – please let it be the start of a new trend!
Free to air tv in prime time is braindead stuff, easily digested and instantly forgotten – perfect for the unthinking masses.
There are some really good shows on free to air channels, but you have to search out for it and guaranteed it won’t start until after 11pm at night, e.g. Hannibal, Shameless, The Good Wife.
Oh well, series record and watch it the need evening skipping through the ad breaks. I can’t think of the last time I actually watched a commercial. I wonder if the advertisers realise that because of the rubbish that makes up the bulk of prime time tv they don’t reach me.

First of all, who is Latch? Secondly, i’m not happy that MasterChef has been cut. If TVNZ want to air a DIY/renovation show, then, as Deb said, create more seasons of Mitre 10 Dream Home… a classic show from years back!!
