Campbell could lose crown, as Best on the Box awards heat up

The Best on the Box Awards could be heading for one of its biggest upsets yet, with early votes indicating that TV3’s John Campbell is in danger of losing his current affairs crown.

Campbell, who presents TV3’s Campbell Live, has won the Best Current Affairs Presenter category of the TV Guide annual awards for the past five years, but Seven Sharp presenter Mike Hosking could break his winning streak.

Campbell won last year’s awards by a landslide, receiving 43 per cent of the total votes, his nearest competitor, Miriama Kamo, last year bringing in 24.2 per cent. But this year’s results tell a different story.

With current affairs competition from Hosking, Paul Henry and Susan Wood, results tallied yesterday show Campbell holding only a five per cent lead on Hosking.

The competition is changing every day. On Thursday last week Hosking was ahead by one per cent.

Campbell Live executive producer, Pip Keane said that Campbell wasn’t keen to enter into a ‘tit-for tat battle’ to campaign for votes, unlike Hosking, who has promoted the awards on his show.

“I just can’t make John beg. He refuses, so let the audience decide,” Keane said.

“Surely all the teachers (Novopay), most of Christchurch, the Samoan community (#ABsToSamoa) and the KidsCan staff haven’t voted yet.

“We did wonder initially if the TV Guide had Mike in the right category. Current affairs? In saying that, he’s done a wonderful job for SKYCITY. We can only dream of crispy pork prawns and crispy chicken at Ming Court,” Keane joked.

Hosking and Seven Sharp weren’t available to discuss the awards, but viewers can have their say by voting online or fill in the voting form in the latest TV Guide, on sale now.

All voters will go into the draw to win a 42′ Smart TV from LG and a 12-month subscription gift card to Quickflix.
