The new companion series for the hit zombie show The Walking Dead began last night and Fear The Walking Dead, as a spin off, worked really well. So well that it drew the highest series premiere for a cable channel with 10.1M viewers.

Unlike The Walking Dead which begins after the zombie apocalypse has taken place and it quickly becomes all about survival, Fear The Walking Dead begins in Los Angeles while the world is still functioning as normal.

Anyone who loved Breaking Bad and what AMC did with the prequel Better Call Saul and the telling of a side story that so brilliantly intertwined the two shows and revealed the depth of the world the series’ had created, the thought of seeing that done again is quite exciting.

I had assumed going into last night that the story was going to be similar to the conflicts experienced by Rick Grimes but to see that the story is being told from not only a different set of characters and view points but from a different time leads to the possibility of some explanations about what has been happening in the previous five seasons of The Walking Dead.

Normally, zombies and horror aren’t my thing but there is something about The Walking Dead and now Fear The Walking Dead (does anyone else hate the title?) that have been hooked.

There was one highly disappointing thing about last night’s 90 minute premiere though. I’d previously caught up on The Walking Dead via a streaming service and binged 4 seasons prior to the fifth coming out. Having enjoyed clicking to watch the next episode wasn’t something I was able to do this time around. I guess that is the one hook that broadcast television still has in that if you want to watch it now, and live, there is a same time, same channel you have to be locked into every week…

Cannot wait for whats to come for this spin off! They executed the first episode well with a thoughtful beginning (dysfunctional family working together to get by). Although It was interesting/odd to be watching it on SoHo, rather than on TV2 which is home to ‘The Walking Dead’ original. As for the name…I think it will grow on us.
