Ratings: Story bounces, impact on Seven Sharp

TV3’s new 7pm current affairs program, Story has rebounded from the second week lows and was up 10% on the previous week to an average audience of 188,048 viewers per night. While the bounce is good news, the numbers were only higher than the last two weeks of Campbell Live before the show was put in review so there is little celebrate. Additionally, the overall weekly average was again dragged lower by the under performing Lip Sync Battle which has failed to garner an audience higher than 100,000.

Seven Sharp was down less than 1% on the previous week to an average audience of 478,618 viewers per night. Since Story began, TV One has lost 11% of the audience it had while TV3 had no current affairs programming on at 7pm, a drop of 58,218 viewers on average per night.

Year on year, it was still a 4% decline on 2014 for TV3 and 37% lower than 2013 while TV One was up 2% on last year and 15% higher than 2013.

Story had a shocker in the 25-54 demo last week. Do you have a comparison with CDWM? And if Friday is anything to go by John Drinnan was probably right. Jono and Ben will be moved to 7.

Is that Come Dance With Me? Wasn’t it Dancing With The “Stars”?

      • Mark

Lol. I think Come Dine With Me is the show the insightful and totally unbiased commentator Mary is referring to.

        • Jay

Jono and Ben are really not funny.

          • Guest

I concur. When it was a 30 minute programme with no pressure to succeed it was fun and an easy watch; now it’s just ra-ra-ra with no substance. And Guy Williams is just dire.

          • K

If they put it at 7, lets hope they put it back to 30mins

          • Mark

Yes, please get rid of Guy Williams. Serious cringeworthy material.

I would suggest that TV3 would largely be happy with this. It’s pretty tough to launch a new show especially after all the fanfare wears off.

Seven Sharp started poorly (in comparison with Close Up ratings) and as they tweaked the format the ratings grew from there.

From the snippets of Story I’ve seen HDPA is excellent (this surprised me), Duncan Garner is as shite as expected and it’s got just as many fluff pieces as SS. I don’t see the ratings getting significantly worse and I think it should improve over time.

    • Regan Cunliffe

I’m not so sure. The ratings are still pretty dismal compared to what Campbell Live was doing, even 12 months ago. I’d be inclined to give Duncan a week or two off and see if that helps lift the numbers.

      • benpaul12

Hmmm I tend to agree, but I don’t think that TV3 would have seriously thought Story was going to kick-ass in the ratings straight out of the gates?

        • Regan Cunliffe

probably not, but the whole point was to deliver a shot in the arm where Campbell Live wasn’t. This hasn’t happened.

          • Aaron Lucas

I’m finding the show much better than Campbell Live. It’s less “moany” and gets to the point a lot faster. I find I dip in and out of it more, depending on whether I like the story.

          • Mark

Yes tighter stories and more of them is an improvement. There’s only so much whinging, hand-wringing, and condescending preachiness viewers can take. Even many of those in the “Save Campbell Live” camp admitted online they had drifted away from the show in recent years because it all got a bit much.

      • K

Who would you replace Duncan with or would Heather go it alone?

        • Regan Cunliffe

What would a John Campbell/HDPA show looked like?

I think Paul Henry and HDPA would be an interesting watch. Who else is there? Leave it to HDPA? Whatever the case, having spent much of the year watching Campbell, I’m not tuning in now simply because of Garner. Just removing him would be a good start…

          • K

Don’t know if you saw Paul Henry show when HDPA was on the panel with Willie Jackson.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VobD5JjcpPg Not a great fan of Willie but thought they were a more interesting pairing… Yes HDPA would be a good match for Henry

          • Aaron Lucas

Henry works well when he’s being told off a lot by a female sidekick like Hilary Barry or Ali Mau.

          • benpaul12

She’s shown him up because she’s far more intelligent.

I don’t see Ali Mau coming back to TV anytime soon, the public doesn’t seem to enjoy her and no matter what, she gets people offside (like Rachel Smalley).

PH/HDPA seems like the best mix, I think this would be highly successful against SS.

          • K

I agree with Aaron , there are definitely improvements from Campbell Live…the faster pace is much better. I also dip in & out more (guess a lot do, going by the ratings)..if PH was hosting I would make an effort to watch

          • K

Apparently when Paul Henry is sick Ali will be his fill in. I must be in the minority … don’t mind Ali at all

          • Guest

I used to be a fan but she is very full of herself now, while at the same time coming across as being very negative about everybody and everything. Who needs to listen to that.

          • Guest

Ali has had her time … I used to be a fan but not so now.

Rachel Smalley is dreadful – and would be a huge ticking bomb to put on live TV – her producer would be on tenderhooks worrying about what inappropriate things she was going to say.

I cannot stand Heather. She is a rude, obnoxious and impatient bully. Naming, taunting and harassing that real estate agent in their first-ever episode was unnecessary – the story still would have had an impact without her needing to do that.
