Karen Olsen Leaving TVNZ

Karen OlsenTVNZ has announced today that weather presenter Karen Olsen will be leaving after 22 years with the company.

Karen says she’s loved her time at TVNZ and that she’s had some amazing experiences and opportunities.

“Reporting live from Antarctica five years ago was an absolute highlight and something I will carry with me for life.

“I’ve also enjoyed working with a really good bunch of people and will miss them.”

Head of News and Current Affairs John Gillespie says Karen’s presence on ONE NEWS will be missed by viewers and colleagues alike.

“Karen’s knowledge as a meteorologist and her dedication to broadcasting has been top rate, we’d like to thank Karen for her service to New Zealand audiences and TVNZ.”

Karen will be on air until early November.

Sad news. She is always professional and informative.

This is sad news … Karen is a true inspiration to people who struggle with things – in her case, she really struggled to report live and i believe Angela D’Audney coached her on that, resulting in her overcoming her difficulties. She and Dan Corbett are met experts; anyone else in their stable is just an autocue reader. (Although, remember a few years back when there was a major storm that hit the Manawatu which none of them forecast? That was bad form). Anyhoo, I wonder if that means Renee Wright will step into her shoes … I hope not; she has to be the worse presenter ever.

It’ll be interesting to see who else is announced to leave – I understand there are 30 jobs all up tipped to go, impacting presenters, camera operators and reporters. It’s disappointing that a lot of the younger reporters coming through now come across like robots – obviously personality isn’t a sought-after trait for the recruitment team.

      Edited to add:
The NZ Herald press release quoted a TVNZ spokesperson as saying that Karen was leaving of her own accord – she is not affected by the restructure. (I feel relieved at that, as if she was being made redundant that would be very poor form for TVNZ).
