3 News’ Rachel Smalley will head to Afghanistan for around ten days to report on the state of the worn-torn country.

Smalley, who is the host of TV3’s new morning show 3News Firstline, will retutn to the country where she had previously worked as a freelancer in 2008.

I’m still working through the logistics of it all and it feels like it’s been months in the planning, but we’ll probably be on the ground for around 10 days or so,” Smalley said. “A lot has changed since I was there. George Bush has gone, bin Laden’s dead and so I think the war’s focus is about to change. I think pretty soon America will start talking about a phased withdrawal.”

Smalley will be replaced by Sam Hayes on Firstline while she is away.

Next IT Crowd series to the the last?

The IT Crowd creator Graham Linehan has suggested the series will end after its upcoming fifth season. “I think one more series to really say goodbye to the characters and the fans,” he said. “I’m not rushing into it because I don’t want it to be a zombie series where the show is dead but its body is still moving around.”

Bateman ready for Arrested Development movie

Arrested Development actor Jason Bateman says he is ready to “jump back in” to an Arrested Development movie. “I have no update at all,” Bateman says. “As far as I know, [creator] Mitchell Hurwitz is working on the script and he wants to start shooting at some point this year. So while I haven’t heard anything new, I haven’t heard anything that would contradict that.

Jersey Shore spin-off described as “pornography”

UK MPs have described the new British spin-off of Jersey Shore as “bordering on pornography”. The series, entitled Geordie Shore, premiered last week on MTV in the UK and drew extensive criticism from locals and officials who believed the series portrayed the area in a bad way.

Another Glee cast member going solo

Naya Rivera is the latest Glee cast member to begin work on a solo album after Mark salling and Michael Morrison. The actress, who plays Santana, will work with Columbia Records.

The Advertising Standards Authority has cleared an ad for the Rugby World Cup that depicts Mt Ruapehu as a giant party-popper after a complaint was submitted.

The ad shows a man and a woman on top of the mountain with the narrator saying: “One day soon, we will be hosting the biggest sporting event in our history, so ANZ bank would like to know: How would you welcome the world New Zealand?”

The man answers “we’d make a giant party popper and fire it from Mt Ruapehu.”

A party-popper is then launched from the crater lake.

The complainant, a J. Milledge, argued that the ANZ ad was demeaning and disrespectful to show the mountain in such a way.

“This is a majestic mountain, a national treasure. I found the images of a massive part popper going off on its summit demeaning and disrespectful,” Milledge complained.

“I write this as a secular, atheist, Pakeha. I can only imagine how Maori, particularly local iwi feel.”

The ASA ruled that the scenario in the ad was portrayed in a “fantastical and hyperbolic way” and that it wouldn’t cause serious or widespread offense.
