This is the inside story of how over the course of 10 years an international team of scientists set out to prove the unthinkable, that 2000 years ago the Greeks had somehow built a working computer. A bronze machine conceived by Archimedes more than 2,000 years ago, for looking into the future. The 2,000-year-old device was recovered from a Roman shipwreck off the southern coast of Greece in 1901, and is believed to be the world’s oldest computer. The object appears to be designed to predict solar eclipses, and according to recent findings, calculate the timing of the ancient Olympics. In this breathtaking documentary, we join an international team of mathematicians, historians and other experts trying to solve the puzzle of the Antikythera Mechanism.

A country looks very different from the skies: like a machine, with its cogs and wheels in permanent motion, or like a living animal with blood coursing through its veins and arteries; the way Britain works is revealed from above in a uniquely compelling way. We can see how what happens in one place has unexpected consequences in another. We can see how our world is changing. We can show how stories from individual people’s lives fit into the bigger picture and how our lives and work are permanently observed and, increasingly, directed from above.
