ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A FIFTH GRADER

QUIZ SHOW

What is the largest bone in your body? Approximately what percentage of the world’s surface is covered by ocean? After China, what country has the biggest population? What Geologic era are we in right now?

We welcome back one of our favourite quiz shows, where contestants have the chance to win a million US dollars – just by answering 10 questions taken from fifth-grader’s school textbooks. Along the way, the player can be assisted by a “classmate”, one of five cast members (who are 10 year old students), in answering the questions. When an answer is incorrect or a contestant decides to end the game, the contestant must profess to the camera that they are, in fact, not smarter than a 5th grader. Oh, and the answers are femur, 70%, India and Cenozoic.

UNITED TRAVEL GETAWAY

LIFESTYLE

Renee Wright goes on a boat cruise in scenic Halong Bay in the north of Vietnam.
Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It covers some 1,500 kilometres scattered with thousands of limestone islands and grottoes rising from the waters of the Gulf of Bac Bo. Halong Bay is a popular spot for short tourist cruises, many of them on restored traditional junks. The cruise that Renee and her crew filmed was with the Emeraude Classic Cruises company and was on a replica of a 1910 paddle steamer. The cruise is usually just for 24 hours, but Renee and her team stayed onboard for two nights to get a bit of extra time to show viewers around. “The cruise boat was lovely,” said Renee. “Although it was a replica not a restored original, it was really nicely done. It had a nice old world charm about it, but will all mod cons.” Activities on board the Emeraude include early morning tai chi on the deck, boat trips to a huge limestone cave and to a swimming spot, and kayaking. The boat also has full spa and restaurant facilities. Renee said the Halong Bay trip was a nice contrast to filming in Hanoi a few days earlier. “I really enjoyed my trip to Hanoi, but it is pretty full-on with the mad motorbike traffic and all the hustle and bustle, so it was lovely to spend a couple of days and nights just peacefully cruising Halong Bay.”

MYTHBUSTERS

FACTUAL

Just when you think Adam and Jamie have tested every gun legend in history, they come up with three more myths.

In an urban shootout, could a criminal’s bullet have hit and then jammed the empty chamber of a policeman’s revolver? Saving Private Ryan might have been based on fact but what about the scene where one sniper kills another by shooting straight down the enemy’s gun scope? And assuming two antique bullets once hit midair in a Civil War battle, is it even remotely possible those two bullets fused together? In the meantime, Kari, Grant and Tori go to great lengths to see whether humankind’s first and simplest tool — the hammer — could be far more dangerous than you think.
