SKY MOVIES GREATS – Friday 9 October, 6.50pm

Thriller

After boarding a plane to Europe with his fellow French club members, high school student Alex Browning (Devon Sawa) has a premonition of the aircraft exploding moments after takeoff, killing every on board. Alex panics, insisting that everyone get off the plane. In the melee than ensues, seven people, including Alex, are forced to disembark–saving them from a fiery death when the plan explodes as Alex foresaw.
One by one, each of these seven who cheated fate meets an untimely end, Alex and his remaining friend’s band together to try change destiny and outwit the untameable forces of death.

Hedy Carlson (Jennifer Jason Leigh) appears at the apartment of Allie Jones (Bridget Fonda) when Allie is at her neediest and has thrown out her unfaithful boyfriend (Steven Weber) but, she’s still on the verge of calling him back. The surviving half of a set of twins, Hedy perpetually seeks someone to complete her and sees in the chic and articulate Allie everything she would like to be. So Hedy moves not only into the apartment, but into the most personal aspects of Allie’s life, including having her hair styled and coloured to exactly match her roommate’s. When Allie reconciles with her boyfriend, their unspoken bargain-intended to help both survive in the vast and often frightening canyons of New York City-goes terrifyingly awry, driving both women to their most primal extremes from which only one can emerge.

In this classic of the horror film genre that launched a movie franchise, a hideously scarred pedophile who was murdered by a lynch mob returns years later in the terrifying nightmares of his killers’ teenaged children … and the dreaming teenagers are starting to die in their sleep.  Starring Robert Englund, Johnny Depp.

*In the end scene, the top to the convertible came down faster and harder than expected.  The expression from the actors is real.

10 October: A Nightmare on Elm Street: Freddy’s Revenge (HD)

Freddy’s back…and he wants revenge.

When teenager Jesse Walsh moves to Elm Street, Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) starts appearing in his nightmares.  This time, Freddy takes possession of Jesse’s body whenever the teenager falls asleep, using Jesse to kill…and there’s nothing Jesse can do to stop him.

*Brad Pitt, John Stamos and Christian Slater all auditioned for the role of Jesse.

17 October: A Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors (HD)

Freddy Krueger invades the minds of a new group of teens…and the nightmares begin again.  When local teenagers start dying, only Nancy Thompson knows the truth.  Now a doctor at the local psychiatric hospital, she is the lone survivor of one of Freddy’s previous killing sprees.  Now, it’s a fight against her co-workers’ disbelief and a race against time to stop Freddy before he kills again.  Starring Robert Englund, Heather Lagenkamp, Patricia Arquette and Laurence Fishburne.

*Patricia Arquette’s first movie.


24 October: A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Master (HD)

Freddy Kreuger (Robert Englund) resurrects – hideously scarred – and returns to haunt the dreams of the teenaged children of the people who lynched him.  It’s just a nightmare … but a nightmare that can kill in this tale of terror.

*The name of the diner where Alice works is called the “Crave Inn”, a reference to series creator Wes Craven.

31 October: A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child (HD)            

Did you ever see a dream stalking…?  The kids on Elm Street have.  For five years, a walking nightmare named Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) has haunted their sleep – seeking revenge for the horribly disfiguring death he suffered at the hands of the children’s parents.

Now, through the dreams of an unborn child, Freddy has resurrected himself…and he’s looking for new victims.

*Both horror author Stephen King and comic book writer Frank Miller were offered the job of writing and directing this movie.

7 November: Nightmare On Elm Street: The Final Nightmare (HD)

In this sixth return to the horrifying world of Nightmare on Elm Street, the town of Springwood decides to forever end Freddy Krueger’s (Robert Englund) deadly hold on their dreams.  Freddy finally confronts the one person he has never been able to defeat, a psychologist who now learns the source of her lifelong nightmares – Freddy’s daughter.

*Peter Jackson was originally hired to write the screenplay for this film. He wrote a draft, but it wasn’t used.

14 November: Jason Goes To Hell

Tracked down and blown to bits by a special FBI task force, everyone now assumes he’s finally dead.  But everybody assumes wrong.  Jason has been reborn with the chilling ability to assume the identity of anyone he touches.  The terrifying truth is that he could be anywhere.  Or anybody.

In this shocking, blood-soaked finale to Jason’s carnage-ridden reign of terror, the horrible secret of his unstoppable killing instinct is finally revealed.  And once you know the chilling facts, you’ll see him in your nightmares … And he’ll see you in hell!

*The patches on the shoulders of the Crystal Lake police uniforms state that Crystal Lake is in Cunningham County. This is a homage to Sean S. Cunningham, who is the producer of this movie, and was the producer & director of Friday the 13th (1980).

21 November: Wes Craven’s New Nightmare

Ten years after writer and director Wes Craven brought his personal nightmares as Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) in A Nightmare on Elm Street, the horrifying child killer returns, stepping out of his celluloid world to haunt the life of the actress who first defeated on film in the terrifying Wes Craven’s New Nightmare.

*Wes Craven’s daughter Jessica Craven appears as a nurse.

28 November: Freddy vs Jason (HD)

It’s a Nightmare on Friday the 13th.

Robert Englund reprises his role as the famous dream stalker, Freddy Krueger, who joins forces with fellow horror maven, Jason Voorhees, to create a new reign of terror on Elm Street, but the collaboration soon turns into a nightmarish face-off between Freddy vs. Jason.

*This was the first Freddy movie not filmed in the United States, and the filmmakers had to search for a new house that would resemble the famous Freddy Krueger/Elm Street house from the first seven “Nightmare” films.

Romantic Comedy

An ambitious young woman, Melanie Carmichael (Reese Witherspoon), moves to New York to escape her simple life in Alabama. In no time, she reinvents herself as an up-scale fashion designer who is engaged to the city’s most eligible bachelor (Patrick Dempsey), the son of the respected Mayor. But Melanie’s past holds many secrets, including the husband that she married in high school (Josh Lucas) – who refuses to divorce her. Determined to end her contentious marriage, Melanie travels to Alabama to confront her past – only to discover that you can take the girl out of the South, but you can never take the South out of the girl!

Teenager Holly Hamilton (Hilary Duff) is tired of moving every time her single mum Jean (Heather Locklear) has another personal meltdown involving yet another second-rate guy. To distract her mother from her latest bad choice, Holly conceives the perfect plan for the perfect man…an imaginary secret admirer who will romance Jean and boost her shaky self-esteem. When the virtual relationship takes off, Holly finds herself having to produce the suitor, borrowing her friend’s charming and handsome Uncle Ben (Chris Noth) as the face behind the e-mails, notes and gifts. Holly must resort to increasingly desperate measures to keep the ruse alive and protect her mum’s newfound happiness…almost missing the real perfect man when he does come along.

Woody Harrelson stars as Larry Flynt, a small-time strip-club owner who created a publishing empire with his raw and raunchy Hustler magazine. The grade-school dropout became a blue-collar Hugh Hefner, marrying exotic dancer Althea Leasure (Courtney Love) and settling into a 24-room mansion. But Hustler pushed the limits of American tolerance, and Flynt attracted enemies like a magnet. Arrested for obscenity and constantly harassed, he began an arduous fight against the rising tide of censorship and the emerging radical religious right. Flynt became an unlikely hero and secured his place in history when he took his struggle against the Rev. Jerry Falwell all the way to the Supreme Court. Director Milos Forman was an Oscar® nominee and won the Golden Globe for this award-winning, controversial film.

Academy Award® winning director’s Steven Spielberg’s classic deeply moving story of the special friendship that develops between Elliott, a lonely young boy living in a suburban California community, and a wise, benevolent visitor from another planet who becomes lost on Earth. As Elliott attempts to help his extra-terrestrial companion contact his home planet so that he might be rescued, they must elude scientists and government agents determined to apprehend the alien for their own purposes…which results in an adventure greater than anything either of them could have imagined. The film co-stars Dee Wallace Stone, Henry Thomas, and, at the tender age of six, Drew Barrymore.

Mitch (Luke Wilson), a thirty-something businessman, has found himself living a boring, mundane lifestyle. Unfortunately for him, his girlfriend, Heidi , has been getting more adventurous on her own, by throwing wild sex parties while he’s away !.
When Mitch catches her in the act, he moves out and takes up residence in a house close to the local university. This prompts his buddies Frank (Will Ferrell) and Beanie (Vince Vaughn) to throw Mitch a huge party in honour of his renewed single status. Antics at the party lead to the formation of a makeshift fraternity where age and academics don’t matter, and Mitch is the reluctant “godfather.” But when the university’s scheming dean (Jeremy Piven) catches wind of the new fraternity, he becomes determined to stop their fun.
