duncan_garner_1200I made it quite clear before Story went to air that Duncan Garner was the wrong person to front TV3’s new current affairs program. After a month at the helm, and ratings that are doing as badly as Campbell Live was before Mediaworks put the program into review, it is clear that more changes need to be made.

Story hasn’t warmed to viewers. Part of that problem is Garner. He is not a natural when it comes to fronting these types of shows and by now, those making these decisions should have figured that out. Chrystal_Evening_Bachelorette_TheBachelorNZ_1741I watched in bemusement a few weeks ago as certain individuals from the media mounted a campaign against another Mediaworks’ employee over something that had caused them to be offended. I’m talking about The Edge’s cucumber number stunt, which saw eliminated contestants from The Bachelor perform a phallic act on it live on air.

Yesterday, despite the outrage, the BSA released their ruling.

The hosts of the Jay-Jay, Mike and Dom show interviewed an eliminated contestant from The Bachelor about her experience on the show. At the end of the item, one of the hosts introduced the new ‘Bachelorette game show’ titled, ‘What’s your cucumber number?’ The premise was for contestants to put cucumbers into their mouths and bite down. Whichever contestant could bite down the farthest along the cucumber would be the winner. The Authority did not uphold the complaint that this was demeaning to women and unsuitable for children. The broadcast was not outside audience expectations of the station and breakfast radio shows generally, and the innuendo would have gone over the heads of most children.

The exit of current Sky Television CEO John Fellett can’t come soon enough for investors who have seen nearly a billion dollars wiped off the value of the company since July last year, and more than 625 million of that in the last month alone.

Sky has been struggling to make the transition in the new media environment and has regularly encountered problems with their streaming products, leaving customers with expensive subscriptions for poor quality services. Continue reading »
