Sky begs customers to stay with themSky have released their annual report this morning and if the share price is anything to go by, the investor panic is setting in.

Sky’s share price has fallen more than 22% on their highs of a little over twelve months ago as subscribers ditch the pay tv service in favour of better and cheaper alternatives, a trend that is affecting media companies world wide. The share price is down 13% this month alone and still falling.

Sky’s subscriber base has also fallen to levels lower than both the last two annual reports and marks the third consecutive year the pay tv broadcaster has experienced a drop in market penetration. Continue reading »

Netflix_LogoI listened with much interest yesterday as various commentators claimed that the so-called “Netflix Tax” being proposed on purchases of goods and services outside of New Zealand would level the playing field. Let’s be clear about this. It won’t.

It has been suggested that the government is missing out on an estimated $180 million in revenue from kiwis off shore spending so it would appear to me that the argument has little to do with supporting local businesses and more to do with seeing how much more the taxman can squeeze out of people. The 276,780 viewers on debut, while stronger than its predecessor, is still on par with the kind of numbers John Campbell and his team have regularly enjoyed in the past and with the expected surge of those checking in to see if the new program was any good, the question now remains as to whether the audience liked what they saw and will stick around or if the numbers will once begin to dwindle.
