The doctors of Seattle Grace return in a heart-rending two-hour special, in the new season premiere of Grey's Anatomy.

George (T. R. Knight) and Izzie (Katherine Heigl) were both an inch away from death, in the dramatic last season finale, and now the entire hospital wait with baited breath to see who will survive.

Meanwhile, the Chief (James Pickens Jr) must deal with a shocking blow to his career, Derek (Patrick Dempsey) receives an unexpected job offer, Lexie (Chyler Leigh) is asked to befriend a young female patient with serious injuries and no support system at her side, and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) will try to do her job while virtually everyone around her is reeling from the events at the hospital.

In a special Christmas episode entitled 'Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer', 'tis the season for giving when a young boy needs the gift of a new heart, while Alex (Justin Chambers) needs the gift of help and compassion from his friends as he prepares to re-take his exam. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) has to remind Izzie (Katherine Heigl) of the true spirit of the Christmas holiday; and despite the reconciliation with his wife, McDreamy (Patrick Dempsey) isn't in a festive mood.

With the new season's launch just around the corner, TV2 revisits Grey's Anatomy, bringing you up to date with McSteamy, McDreamy, and their colleagues at Seattle Grace hospital.

In the season premiere, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) learn that "happily ever after" isn't easy, and the Chief (James Pickens Jr) and his staff reel at the news that Seattle Grace is no longer nationally ranked as a top-tier teaching hospital.

Meanwhile a freak ice storm not only brings trauma patients to Seattle Grace, it brings a mysterious military doctor as well, who catches Cristina's (Sandra Oh) eye.

The fate of Izzie hangs in the balance tonight, in the heart stopping season finale of Grey’s Anatomy.

After spending time with a fellow cancer patient, Izzie contemplates whether or not to undergo a risky surgery, which could mean life or death for her. Facing pressure from her new husband Alex, and friend Meredith to make different decisions, Izzie's dilemma is resolved by the fate of a fellow patient.

Tonight Grey’s Anatomy celebrates its 100th episode, which creator Shonda Rhimes describes as "a love letter to the fans", with the long awaited nuptials of Meredith and Derek.

After a roller coaster romance which has spanned the life of Grey's Anatomy, the much anticipated wedding of Derek and Meredith is finally upon them, and good friend Izzie, who is critically ill, has planned the 'perfect wedding'.

Sunday 28 June, 8.30pm

Returning to Seattle Grace for his first surgery since his breakdown, Derek finally asks Meredith the question she’s been waiting to hear, tonight on Grey’s Anatomy.

Coaxed back into the hospital by his colleagues to perform surgery on Izzie who needs tumours removed from her brain, Derek is feeling the pressure as tensions run high at Seattle Grace. All eyes on Derek to see how he will handle his first surgery after his breakdown.

Owen has another PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) episode that injures Cristina and traumatises both of them, throwing the future of their relationship into question.

Sunday 7 June, 8.30pm

On Grey’s Anatomy this week, Oscar winning screen legend, Faye Dunaway (Chinatown) guest stars as a renowned surgeon who locks horns with Cristina.

Cristina calls the abilities of experienced surgeon, Dr Campbell (Faye) into question after she botches a standard procedure, which starts a debate over the effectiveness of old and new medical practice.

Derek's confidence is shaken like never before as he comes into confrontation with Addison over what course is best for their dying pregnant patient. Faced with the decision of saving the woman or her baby, Derek goes to extreme measures. Bailey, meanwhile, who has decided to pursue a fellowship in Pediatrics, is appalled by the Chief's less-than-stellar recommendation letter.
