Grey's Anatomy's 100th episode

Sunday 19 July, 8.30pm

Tonight Grey’s Anatomy celebrates its 100th episode, which creator Shonda Rhimes describes as "a love letter to the fans", with the long awaited nuptials of Meredith and Derek.

After a roller coaster romance which has spanned the life of Grey's Anatomy, the much anticipated wedding of Derek and Meredith is finally upon them, and good friend Izzie, who is critically ill, has planned the 'perfect wedding'.

"Izzie wants to make this the most magical wedding ever," says associate producer Chris Van Dusen.

Rhimes agrees it will be a memorable event. "Everyone will be attending the wedding. Mark has been asked to be Derek's best man, Cristina is the maid of honour, Lexie and Izzie are bridesmaids."

In true Rhimes style, and keeping in mind that this is Seattle Grace hospital, and life always comes with its hazards, Derek and Meredith's path to happily ever after will face another hurdle.

On the day of the wedding, a group of college students, who were on route to their graduation ceremony, are injured in a horrific car crash and are admitted to the ER, where Lexie and George fight to save as many lives as possible with the assistance of Dr Hunt.

Kevin McKidd, who plays trauma surgeon Owen Hunt, elaborates. "It's pretty hard-core, and it all has to be dealt with on the same day."

Meredith, Derek and all of their friends, who are preparing for the wedding, are pulled in to surgeries.

Izzie, meanwhile, fears the worst when she begins experiencing her familiar symptoms, and with Denny's return she knows it is just a matter of time. Alex learns what it means to be a man, and George is there for Izzie to lean on when she needs him.
