MasterChef New Zealand coming soon to TV ONE

The first New Zealand version of the globally popular cooking show MasterChef is coming soon to TV ONE.

TVNZ is calling for contestants from around the country to be on the show.

"TVNZ is thrilled to be producing a New Zealand version of this internationally popular show for Kiwi viewers," says Jane Wilson, TVNZ General Manager of Programming.

"The Australian series, currently screening between 5pm and 6pm on TV ONE, was a huge success for Channel TEN reaching more than four million viewers. TV ONE's version will build on the popularity of both the BBC and Australian MasterChef series. It is exciting to be able to give Kiwis the chance to particiapate in this show, and watch someone on their journey to be crowned the first ever MasterChef New Zealand."

MasterChef gives budding chefs the ultimate once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to develop their cooking skills, be mentored by the best, and ultimately make a change in their lives.

Initial rounds will see a large number of hopeful contestants from across New Zealand audition before the judges, in order to gain a place as a semi-finalist. Contestants must be at least 18 years or over at the time of their audition, and their main source of income cannot come from preparing and cooking fresh food in a professional environment.

The semi-finalists will then compete in several challenges, which test their food knowledge and preparation skills, to become a finalist. These finalists will then be whittled down through a number of cooking challenges and eliminations, until a winning MasterChef is crowned.

The New Zealand version will be produced by Imagination TV, and is based on the successful Australian Channel TEN version of the BBC format.

The host and judges are yet to be confirmed. To apply, go to MasterChef New Zealand comes to TV ONE

Robert! I understand fully what you are saying, but I don't think you are understanding me. Channel 10 Australia supposedly were looking to boost there ratings and from what I have read they did that successfully. However Masterchef, is what I like and quite frankly the Australian version, has not portrayed that, it is a Reality TV cookup, and therefore shouldn't be called Masterchef. I just loved Masterchef UK, it is a professional Chef programme, and you saw some extra ordinary dishes from the contestants. Boring it was not, you saw the contestants grow. The judges were looking for excellence, and that is the type of program I enjoy. I am not BIG on Soap Operas, and never watch them. The only reason I have watched a bit of the Australian format of this show, is because it is showing at 5pm before the evening news, and I am usually getting dinner ready myself. If this was on at any other time, I wouldn't of watched it at all. It is rubbish in my eyes. The contestants are very poor with the exception of about 4 of them, did you see how they mutilated a leg of lamb, OMG i just cracked up. Naf, they need to go back to the Edmonds Cook Book and learn the basics, maybe then they could enter a Masterchef competition. The 3 finalist for the UK 2009, were just exceptional. Probably will have Michelin stars in a few years. Thats what I want to see. Sorry but I just don't rate the Austrlian program as Masterchef.

Sparky MasterChef was extemely popular in Australia and I watched just about every episode. It was on nearly every night of the week and was much talked about as well as being a ratings winner all the time. It was accepted by the broader community, not the limited population that post on forums. You must remember that it is a television show and it would be pointless producing a show that no one would watch. A lot of drama was introduced by voting people off and not everyone was happy with the final result. However the majority of decisions were made by the judges based on particular criteria. I also watched some of the English version but found it boring in the extreme and lost interest. I for one can't wait for the next season of Australian MasterChef. I hope the NZ version is as popular over there as the Austrailian version was here.

Isn't it ironic that Imagination TV isn't being very imaginative in copying another show?

Thankyou Imagination TV Ltd. I am so pleased to hear that you are not going to have contestants VOTING off there peers. If you are going to have a balanced Masterchef programme with bits from both the Australia and the UK, then NZ should have the BEST Masterchef ever. Myself and a dozen other friends have been just boggled by the Aussie version. Folk that showed so much promise being voted off and others who can't boil an egg still there dishing up crap. Of course I know who has won the Australian version by checking it out on the Internet, and TRULY I just can't believe this person won. Just a sham. Thanks so much for your message, and to know we won't be looking at such nonsense. I really appreciate that.

I heard that Channel Ten liked the voting each other off aspect so much, and the drama it creates, they're thinking of integrating it into the next Australian Idol.

Hi

We are the production company behind MasterChef New Zealand.

We would like to assure you that we are making MasterChef a New Zealand format for a Kiwi audience. There will of course be some similarities to the Australian and British formats, but it's important to note that contestants in MasterChef NZ will NOT be asked to vote off other participants.

There is still time for you to apply online at

Thanks

Regan in answer to your question! I am basing my statement on forums I have read, of which there are many on the Internet, and also a group of my friends. Not one of us like the Australian format. More the contestants voting one another off, and also the living together in a house for weeks, it just leads to contempt. I guess my biggest beef is that it is supposed to be Masterchef, when in fact this format is like Survivor or Big Brother. In the UK version the calibre of contestant is better and you see them improving in every challenge. What I have seen of the Australian contestants, is poor, and no one seems to be getting any better. If they were in the UK they would of been long judged out. It is just a reality cook off, not Masterchef. I know you are going to say but the ratings for Channel 10 were high. But it is not for the cooking or the challenge for a Masterchef, it is just a group of people trying to cook, and doing a very poor job of it. It is a JOKE.

The UK MasterChef format gets really repetitive until they get down to the final four. I like the Australia format expect for the "Survivor" style eliminations which turns MasterChef into a popularity contest.

regan

@sparky What are you basing your statement on that people hate the aussie version?  Masterchef Australia has been one of the highest ratings programmes in Australia and hasn't been too bad for TVNZ here either.

I have just been having a chat with a group of friends, and one of the folk was keen to enter NZ Masterchef, but was reluctant to apply simply because of the format the Australians put forward. As she said if your going to be judged by your fellow contestants, then it was not for her. We all agreed. Leave the eleminations to the JUDGES. Jane the GM for prgrammes at TVNZ, surely doesn't know how unpopular this Aussie version really is. People hate it.It is not for the cooking, so really you don't need CHEFS to judge. Lets see the UK format, that is professional. Can't wait for the next UK MASTERCHEF.

If NZ, have contestants voting out competitors like the Aussie version, then I for one Won't be watching. For goodness sake why follow the bloody Aussies. UK's version was excellent. We don't want a soap opera, we want a BEST CHEF, otherwise don't call it Masterchef. The only reason I have watched any of the Australian format, is not for the cooking but to see the catty stupid carry on. NAF

Isn't that what it says in the post anyway?

If it's ratings based then one can assume it will be based on Masterchef Australia.
