Mitre 10 Dream Home | Rants
TVNZ dumps another home-grown show
It's happened again. Complacency has won out over creativity and it's now just too hard for TVNZ to make Mitre 10 Dream Home profitably.
A season in 2010 of the highly rating series was always in question after the company that had been making it went belly up recently but TVNZ had been expressed interest so there was still a glimmer of hope of it surviving. However, thankfully there is a bit of a recession on at the moment so that's excuse that's been handed down as why they've decided to shelve it.
This leads me to a number of questions. TVNZ were planning on producing the show in-house which one would expect would have saved them thousands in the first instance so where does that leave the problem being? One would have to assume therefore that the sponsors just aren't prepared to stump up with the same level of support that they had in the past leaving TVNZ with the proposition of either finding other sponsors or dropping it altogether.
Of course, it's too much effort to have that level of commitment from our state broadcaster. The easier, cheaper option is always the safer one to go with.
So what will replace it? I'm sure they could pick Channel Nine's Home Made for dirt cheap.
Here's to less local content on air, again.

Why do local artists need massive productions? A TV crew and a reporter investegating their work, do a couple of different people doing different things every week, how ****ing much could that cost? I mean yes it would be a bit, but you'd expect a state owned enterprise would fund that kinda junk instead of yay Mitre 10!~ yay a middleclass family who couldn't be bothered budgeting get a free ride~ WEEE

One of the bigger problems with doing this show now is the suppliers. A lot of the stuff that goes into the houses is given free by various suppliers. With the recession the suppliers just can't afford to give away that much free stuff. Think about it. Every episode you hear them getting x thousand of free carpet, 2-3 thousand of free appliances and thousands of roofing, etc. We're talking about hundreds of thousands of free or discounted products. I wouldn't be surprised if at least a third of the house is donated in some way. Normally this would just be considered advertising costs by the suppliers but because of the recession no one is doing major renovations so there's no point in them doing this type of advertising.
I have no doubt that Mitre 10 Dream Home will return next year when things settle down. Until then relax, grab a cup of tea, pop in a DVD and dream about that dream home you might get to build.

The show did have it flaws.
There was always a well to do couple and a not so well off couple.
Viewers could see how much money both couples got.
Typical New Zealands always felt sorry for the couple that got the least amount of money to go towards there home and would vote for them.

The two major issues as I see it are
1: A local production has ceased, meaning unemployment for a group of skilled individuals.
2: Dream Home would include a number of people within their commuity coming together to support a project.
Love it or hate it, it was a show about people realising dreams, and thats a powerful theme.
As far as taking issue with its commercial nature, thats purely a reality of the industry.
If we cant have large scale locally produced productions of this nature then theres little room for more creative/artistic efforts.
For the record I was never personally a fan of the show but had watched a few episodes over its many seasons.

TVNZ should be playing that anti 1080 documentary instead of these hour long glorified informercials.
Which is what Mitre 10 Dream Home was.

Something about NZ reality shows really bores me these days. Especially with the dime-a-dozen crappy survivor rip offs with D list celebs are becoming hilariously tiresome.
I'd much rather something about NZ's creativity or the like. Why the **** are we all a bunch of hunters and builders in our television marketing.

Goodness me! what will they show on TV7 in years to come?regan
What shows do we need then bobs?

Completely agree. We don't need shows like Dream Home on our screens so good riddens

Don't think too many people will be upset about this, the show was awful and the host was annoying. Glad TVNZ won't be wasting any more money on this junk.reece_555
Home Made would surely not be shown it was an absolute embarresment for channel nine ratings wise. Surely TVNZ could have found better savings producing the series in house but maybe they werent prepared to produce a show in house that isnt news or current affairs????

Yeah, it's reality tv show. It's not like we're missing out on anything.
And we still have other NZ reality tv programmes to watch.
