Commentary:
Both bulletins incorrectly calculated GST wrongly tonight if it is raised from 12.5% to 15%.
ONE News calculations listed first with ours in brackets:
$5 becomes $5.12 ($5.11)
$2000 becomes $2050 ($2044)
$40000 becomes $41000 ($40889)
$61790 becomes $63335 ($63163)
Here's what 3 News calculated first with ours in brackets:
$1.50 add 0.375 cents (3.33 cents)
$200 add $5 ($4.44)
$1500 add $37.50 ($33.33)
What was the deal with the photo of John Key with a cigar in his mouth looking like a sleazy car salesman on 3 News?
I'm not sure why 3 News felt the need to read out the Facebook page rude comments in detail during their item? Doesn't that just spur on those who write those types of things?
Verdict:
ONE News had better coverage of John Key's speech. I liked their balance of showing not only the increase in GST but also the reduction in taxes and what that could mean.
Both failed spectacularly with their incorrect maths where the prices were all (but one) inflated more than they would be with a change to a 15% GST.

I think maybe Throng should make a program for TV "learning math can be fun"

That's pretty bad, and also quite misleading. I'm guessing the woman who had just returned from her OE used in TV1's story (that was complaining about the GST tax increase) may have been living in the UK, where VAT is 17.5%.
And the 'take out a bottle of wine' example was pretty bad. The GST component of a $200 shopping bill is currently $22.22. Increasing GST by 2.5% would increase the tax compenent of the shopping to $26.67 (Total bill: $204.45). That would be a pretty crap bottle of wine for $4.45!?

Why are tv reporters so incompetent when it comes to economic and financial issues? tv3 had errors with their minimum wage story not long ago too. 3 often uses exaggerated graphics to accentuate their chosen bias.

Both networks just added 2.5% to the totals, which already included GST. Fail.
