Commentary:

I wish we could have seen the “hundreds” of on-lookers during Kim Vinnell’s report – rather than pointing off-screen.  (Update: someone on Twitter says there were about 40 people there.)

Does anyone know the correct pronunciation of “Ady” in Ady Gil?  I noticed Heather du Plessis-Allan repeatedly said it like “arr-dee” not “eh-dee”.

With all the talk of Terry Serepisos’ money issues circulating in the media at the moment it seems fitting that someone should take a look at how his “fired” apprentices are doing.

The Herald is reporting that the contestants who failed to win The Apprentice New Zealand series on TV2 earlier this year are doing quite well.

So while their prospective boss is struggling with tax issues, the likes of Linda Slade, Karen Reid, Kirsty Parkhill and runner-up David Wyatt are all on the up in their respective careers.

Fifth placed Slade has since moved to Auckland to join an advertising agency and  says: “Lots of things are happening; it’s a very exciting time, [The show] definitely opened up the doors for me.”

Reid, who placed fourth, says her Auckland-based health clinic is doing well, while Parkhill has also moved North to take on a position as a hotel’s business development manager.

Meanwhile runner-up Wyatt, who says he doesn’t know enough about Serepisos’ finances to comment, confirmed that he is keeping in touch with winner Thomas Ben.

“Things seem to be going well for him and I wish him all the best,” Wyatt said.

Acclaimed New Zealand actress Rena Owen joins the cast of Shortland Street this week, assuming the exciting role of Hine Ryan.

Perhaps best known for her electrifying lead performance in the local cult-classic, Once Were Warriors, acting alongside Shortland Street’s Temuera Morrison, Owen’s other credits include Star Wars: Episode II and Episode III, Rain of the Children and Piece of My Heart.

Owen says she was excited to be offered the opportunity to work on Shortland Street .

“I didn’t want to miss my chance to work on New Zealand’s most iconic show,” says Owen. “I’m a proud Kiwi, and proud to be a part of Shortland Street now.”

Playing the part of Hine Ryan, James ‘Scotty’ Scott’s (Kiel McNaughton) estranged mother, Owen was immediately drawn to the character.

“I instantly knew that Hine had depth and potential, she was real. She has an interesting back-story, and I felt like I could really relate to her,” says Owen. “I knew that this character would stretch me and really make me work. Accepting this role just felt right. I read the character description and just knew I had to take it.”

Working on Shortland Street , the fastest turn-around television show in the world, took a bit of getting used to for Owen.

“I’ve never worked so hard or fast in my life! The sheer pace of the show is amazing,” says Owen. ” Shortland Street has taught me to be a better actor in terms of working at such a fast pace. You shoot scenes all day, and then learn scenes that night, it really requires immense discipline.”

Owen says that working with her on-screen son Kiel McNaughton and his on-screen fiancé Sarah Thomson (Tracey Morrison) has been an absolute pleasure.

“There’s a really great dynamic between the three of us,” says Owen. “Working with Sarah and Kiel has been an absolute joy. They are both extremely kind and generous and as a result, have made my job so much easier.”

Commentary:

If you’re not a fan of the Royal family, then you probably tuned off the news tonight – both bulletins had extensive coverage of the engagement between Prince William and Kate Middleton.  I was a little surprised to hear 3 News refer to him as “William Wales” and wondered if that really was hus surname (for some reason I thought it was Windsor) but thanks to Wikipedia, it is indeed Wales, although rarely used aloud it is on his military records.

The NZ response angle was taken more seriously on 3 News – interviewing pro-monarchy and pro-republican spokespeople as well as vox pops.  ONE News went and talked to the owner of a themed restaurant, complete with showing us their silly themed toilet.

For the history angle, ONE News recapped the dates and popularity of past royal weddings while 3 News showed us a home video of Kate as a child in a play being told a fortune that she’d marry a prince one day.

We’ll be seeing a whole lot more royal family stories in the news in the lead up to their wedding.

I’m not yet sure what to make of Rebecca Wright’s NZ on Air party story – I suppose more will come out in the days to come if there is a real controversy here.

TV3 and C4 broadcaster TV Works has lost a High Court appeal over ads for international poker tournaments.

Justice Ron Young has today ruled that the ads for the Asia Pacific Poker Tour are defined as promoting gambling by the Gambling Act.

Initially, a District Court ruled in favour of TV Works’ view that the APPT players were playing for a prize and not gambling and that the ads were not in breach of the legal prohibition on publishing or promoting gambling outside New Zealand.

But today’s judgement has overturned that decision, a move that the Department of Internal Affairs has welcomed after appealing the district Court ruling.

“Whether any penalty should be imposed in the District Court in view of these circumstances will be a matter for the Judge if the charges are found proved,” said Justice Young.

Justice Young said also that the legislation was far from clear and he believed that TV Works thought they had acted lawfully.

The case has been referred back to the District Court for further consideration.
