Shortland Street: Monday 22 March - Friday 26 March 2010

Weekdays, 7pm on TV2

Naive Sophie McKay (Kimberley Crossman) puts herself in a dangerous position on Shortland Street this week, when she comes face-to-face with a drug addict, while investigating a story for her journalism paper. But when things quickly get out of hand, will anyone be there to rescue her?

Keen to get a good mark for her first university assignment, Sophie racks her brain for an exciting topic. Finally deciding to focus on drug addiction, Sophie begs her brother Hunter (Lee Donoghue) to talk about his recent experience with junkie, Astrid (Andi Crawn).

Crossman says, "Sophie can see the potential in Hunter's story, so she's really stoked when she manages to talk him around to doing it. His experience was unique and intense, and Sophie feels like she's really nailed it."

But when Sophie asks Loren (Sophia Johnson) to critique her work, she realises that she's missing both sides of the story. With new determination, Sophie decides to get in touch with Astrid to hear her perspective.

"Sophie appreciates that her article will have far more credibility if she could just talk to Astrid," says Crossman. "She knows her family would hit the roof if they found out though, so she secretly tracks her down."

Snooping through the hospital files, Sophie manages to find Astrid's details, and successfully sets up an interview with her. But confident Sophie may not know what she's getting herself into.

Crossman says Sophie is so focused on getting a good scoop, she's not thinking about her safety.

Alone with Astrid, is Sophie McKay asking for trouble?
