Can a new look save Sunrise?

TV3 have just announced a revamp of their breakfast show, Sunrise, to be unveiled on Monday July 13.

There will be a fresh new backdrop, graphics and an "infectious" theme tune from Kiwi composer Keith Ballantyne.

Executive producer Alastair Wilkinson says it's "fresher, smarter and brighter than the opposition, and we hope that viewers will agree."

Director of News and Current affairs Mark Jennings says "The essence of the show remains the same but viewers can look forward to a striking new look with a faster pace."

Can a new look and the addition of Ingrid Hipkiss save the low-rating show?

Update: here's a sneak preview...

The new theme music sounds like a Sunday news program. Not very "smarter, fresher." Just sounds dated before it's had a run.

No, to be fair you are completely right Rachel. Sunrise is an abomination in the Ratings stakes at the moment. I'm no statistician and I can tell you that. Ironbridge would be more than happy to slice Sunrise's $1 million loss of its balance sheet. But the problem is the PR effect. When you dump a show like this, the 3News and TV3 brand takes a thumping (which competitors thrive off) ultimately the brand depreciation trickles down to your rate card. Even TV3 executives joke about Sunrise (one was recently heard saying "you can smell the stench coming from downstairs when they're on air". That said, they will soldier on, continually cutting staff by not introducing new positions, or replacing leaving staff. The makeover was done in house so no real cost there, except for the new soundtrack. For tv3 it's not really a case of what is on air, they are more concerned with it being on air.

I must add I am a little pissed off I can not watch it, I have to go to work! , then the weekend comes there is nothing! The 6 o'clock is too early, the 10:30 news is dead, (when we are in bed) this is one f'ucked up station!

I wonder what it would take for Ironbridge to scrap Sunrise... For any company I guess you way up redundencies and payouts to potential long term gain. Plus with breakfast TV being one of the reason for them buying Mediaworks... But how long do you throw money at it before you bite the bullet..??

Yes tvnewser, I was talking of 3news and not Sunrise. Sunrise is a low rating show, there's no hiding that. I would question how many shows up against an already established show have ever had immediate success.. But I am more than happy to be proven wrong!!

Rachel

Ahh, thanks!

I don't think the person below was meaning Sunrise when they said it's winning key demographics, they were replying to someone saying looke where 3 News is today after having low ratings in the beginning.

Sunrise had almost 50,000 viewers the other morning - quite good for them!

Rachel

All I "claimed" was that it is a low rating show - am I wrong that it's not?  I'd like to know any figures you have to back up your claims - the press releases I see from TV3 haven't said it's winning in key demographics?  (No, I'm not a journalist but I am a statistics lecturer so stats genuinely interest me!)

I don't really see what Sunrise needs saving from either.

The show is doing well, and is constantly increasing in the ratings!

regan

OR... you'd just like to see someone else clarify their point?

...

I'm surprised you claim that Sunrise is dying but then don't know what demos its winning in. Interesting.

You people just can not work it out can you? Who wants to watch a top rating TV3 program like "Sunrise" when all the other programs on TV3 are just total crap, honestly if TV3 did a rerun on some of the TV programs that were on TV 30 years or more ago it would be new programs (or first time seen) to most viewers and if you saw it 30+ years ago most likely you would of lost the plot and you have to ask your caregiver were the coffee pot is, and they would say "right in front of you".

People who like watching old dogs....oh and Jack Eye-wink

Rachel

Which demographics do they win in?

Second in overall numbers, yet winning in key demographics when it comes to advertising dollars... And lets be honest, thats the only reason we have ratings... There is no other use to them...

Yeah, still second.

TV3 stuck with 3 News from day one. Never doubting its ablility to be a ratings leader. It took years but look where it is now.

... please don't spout any nonsense about accountability if you're not about to state who you are.

TV3 aren't trying to "save" Sunrise?  Really?  I bet the investors must be pissed then that a whole lot of money is being spent on an "unnecessary revamp" then.

It's nothing to do with bias.  Everyone knows Sunrise has fairly miniscule ratings.  TV3 should be congratulated for sticking with it.  But the reality is, the show does need saving.  I would like to hope that this does it.  Competition in the morning is needed.  And things can't go on like this the way they are forever.

How biased is that headline? I dont think TV3 is trying to 'save' Sunrise at all, just revamp it. Plus Ingrid wasn't bought on to help 'save' the show - the last newsreader had a baby. Your comments are misleading. Perhaps your bias is showing? I guess no one is claiming to be a journo here, and because it's a blog you're not accountable to maintain any level of balance...

Considering the number of viewers that are now tuning into Sunrise, why would Tv3 scrap it?? Sure its not taking over Breakfast viewers in great numbers, but people who are turning on tv in the morning are flicking on TV3... Perhaps the stale Breakfast programme was the reason people didn't watch breakfast TV..

There isnt exactly great "chemistry" between Rod and Ingrid. On Friday he had her up on air about not talking to him, whats with that?!

Hehe, that second shot looks like a Promo for SVU. Oliver is planning to abduct Carly, and he won't return her until Sunrise gets more than 7 viewers. Dream on Driver, us discerning nz public DO NOT bow to former Actor/Radiohost/WarehouseVO/Breakfast show presenter threats. Sunrise is screwed now the hot chick that reads the news is preggers. The only chick that comes close is Ali Moore.

I see throng still sports readers with well-thought out arguements as to the quality of programming, and don't just say unsubstatiated... oh wait.

I absolutely love Paul Henry, but I still always prefer to watch Sunrise in the mornings - the dynamic between the presenters on the show is great.

Will be interesting to see the new look in motion, rather than just the stills.

So i'm meant to watch them now cause they walk on the sun? How about updating programme format instead... Oh who am i kidding, i'm never up before 1pm in the afternoon.

I much prefer Sunrise over Breakfast. Rachel - I agree, personally I hate Paul Henry. He makes me cringe everytime a flick over to Breakfast. He's the biggest reason I won't watch it.

Rachel

I think it all seems to come down to your opinion of Paul Henry...
