TVNZ press releases giving TV3 the smackdown
Don't you just love seeing press releases by one organisation painting an unpretty picture of their competitor?
Internationally we see some rather vicious press releases from networks who aggressively attack the performances of their competitors shows. It's been happening for a little while here, and it's fairly tame in comparison, but still... TVNZ are really starting to make a song and dance about just how superior their position is when it comes to ratings. Unfortunately, so far there seems to be little response.
TVNZ this morning sent out a press release proudly stating that TV3's Sunrise had experienced a 25% decline in viewership ratings in November. In October the daily average was about 30,000 but it was down to 22,000 last month.
TVNZ also enjoyed making mention that Campbell Live's audience shed 20,000 viewers on the previous month and was beaten by a late night news show on more than one in three nights.
What do you think it is that gives TVNZ the advantage over TV3 and what do you think TV3 has to do to become more competitive?
updated: Apparently the press release from TVNZ was in response to one sent out from TV3 which seemed to have missed our inbox initially. TV3's press release can be seen here.

In the know
What are these redundecies you talk of? 1 redundency has happened at TV3 in this time of budget cuts. Thats a real pat on the back for the bosses of mediaworks and TV3.
80 odd at TVNZ. But Sunrise has definitly been effected by the likly drop in budget
turtle
The numbers for Sunrise are so bad that they regularly lose to Te Karere, which plays at 5.30am and is a repeat of the previous day's bulletin (13 hours old).
How long can TV3 go on? There've already been redundancies (or "shrinkage", as they like to say) at 3, are more on the way?
ell
TVNZ still wins all (I think) target demos for even TV3's target. The numbers for Sunrise are so small that there is no way they could just win a demo. Sure, they have improved massively over Coleman-era figures in the demos, but still a way to go.
O
Actually here's an interesting thought: BF were going to shut down production when 3 announced SR. TVNZ wanted to put that budget back into their 6pm news but couldn't once 3 started SR... If TVNZ can get SR shut down, they can stop BF, put the funding back into producting quality news. Pressures on now with the job cuts and losing the assured $15m government spend on TVNZ current affairs.
O
TV3 is actually producing a superior product IMHO, but people are creatures of habit. Combine that with PHs charisma, and that 5+ has always favoured TVNZ. Oh, and thats just one month. I heard via a friend at NZ Herald that Sunrise easily bet BF as perferred morning show in an online poll where the results were not made public. Talk to people there to see if you can get results released. Whats the YTD stats in the actual target demos? Anyway, TVNZ is in overdrive. Why?

Pual Henry is the reason Breakfast is doing so well. The media blow his "controversies" out of proportion and TVNZ reap the free advertising. I enjoy Paul Henry's dark sense of humor that is rare on TV which is why I watch about 10 minutes of Breakfast in the morning before I go to work.
What is wrong with these Turdcasters? as soon as I can work out how to get a
replacement for the 6pm news, something I can watch at a realistic time
(like say 7pm) my TV is going on the bon fire, honestly if they put their
own house in order before they run others down, TV might be worth watching.
From what I have seen on TV3 morning show it is better than the loose cannon
TV1 employ who is always insulting people & complaints made to the TV
complaints, BUT THEN SOME PEOPLE HAVE TO GO TO WORK.
