2008 General Election

Saturday 8 November, 7pm

Mark Sainsbury hosts TV ONE’s comprehensive Election 08 coverage, with ONE News anchors Simon Dallow and Wendy Petrie, and the ONE News political team, starting at 7pm. ONE News Election 08 will feature extensive coverage, expert analysis, LIVE reporting from around the nation, and all the results as they come in.

Sainsbury will be joined in the studio by senior representatives from the major political parties, political commentators and former politicians, for an insider perspective into the emerging results throughout the night.

Sainsbury will cross regularly to Dallow at the ONE News Election 08 results desk. Dallow will update viewers on the results as they come in, and cross LIVE to ONE News journalists and presenters in the field. Both Sainsbury and Dallow will also interview MPs throughout the evening.

ONE News political editor Guyon Espiner and political analyst Therese Arseneau will join Simon Dallow at the results desk to explain and contextualise the results as they arrive. The pair bring their expert political perspective about specific electorate results, voter behaviour and the political personalities involved.

Victoria University political experts Richard Arnold and Nigel Roberts will staff the ONE News Election 08 analysis desk, tracking the Party Vote for emerging trends and likely outcome; how many seats each party looks to gain in the House; and how they might be configured to form a Government or Opposition.

Wendy Petrie will present newsbreaks each hour on the hour, to get the latest from ONE News crews around the country and recap key events.

Pippa Wetzell will host a number of ‘real’ voters – ordinary New Zealanders who will share their voting experience, their motivation for their voting decision, and their expectations of the Election 08 outcome.

From 15 locations around the country, ONE News’ award-winning team of journalists and presenters will bring viewers all the news, events and reactions from the party headquarters, key electorates and pivotal politicians and party officials.

• Sunday at 10am, Agenda, TV ONE’s political current affairs programme with Rawdon Christie and Guyon Espiner, will have the latest news and analysis of the results as the parties begin the process of forming the Government.

• ONE News At 6pm on Sunday will have a post-election special bulletin, with comprehensive analysis of the Election 08 outcome. The ONE News team will talk to key winners and losers of the election, as well as the nation’s foremost political experts about the election results and where to now.

• On Sunday, at 7.30pm, TV ONE’s award-winning investigative team will present an hour-long LIVE post-election special, analysing the outcome of Election 08, and the implications of the results for New Zealanders.

Saturday, November 8th at 7pm

3 NEWS’ Election night coverage on November 8 will begin at 7.00pm with John Campbell presenting a live broadcast from the Auckland studio. He will be chairing a panel of New Zealand’s top political commentators and analysts, including former cabinet minister the Hon. Steve Maharey, political journalist Linda Clark, leading political scientist Jon Johansson, political commentators Chris Wikaira and Matthew Hooton and former Independent editor Jenni McManus, who will give viewers extensive and immediate analysis of results as they unfold. Leading up to the election, 3 NEWS will be running weekly polls, in the 2005 election 3 NEWS’ final poll gave the closest reading to the actual election results.

3 NEWS will utilise its highly experienced team of political reporters, lead by Political Editor Duncan Garner and including John Campbell, Scott Campbell, Sia Aston and Ali Ikram. 3 NEWS will also be working in conjunction with Maori Television to give viewers exclusive access to information on key Maori seats.

To complement the broadcast coverage, 3 News’ dedicated election website, decision08.co.nz will be simulcasting the election night coverage. Electorate results will be updated in real time, giving web users the most immediate online coverage available. The site also features extensive party information, blogs and a policy comparison section.

Tonight, for the first time, the leaders of National and Labour will go head to head during TVNZ’s first You Tube debate at 7:00pm on TV One
