Wednesday July 9th C4 welcomes a brand new season of The Office (US) at 7.30pm followed by brand spanking new property 30 Rock at 8.00pm. This makes for an hour of top notch comedy – with both shows having won their share of awards including Emmys. “TV’s two best comedies” claims a recent issue of New York Magazine. And who are we to argue?

Emmy Award-winner Tina Fey (“Saturday Night Live,” “Mean Girls”) writes, executive-produces and stars as writer Liz Lemon in “30 Rock,” an irreverent, and wildly funny workplace comedy set behind-the-scenes of a live variety show. “30 Rock” is told through the comedic voice of Fey and features the inimitable and Oscar-nominated Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy, the brash network executive who turns Liz’s show (and life) upside down with his meddling ways. Set in New York City, this smart and popular series also stars Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowski, Scott Adsit, and Jack McBrayer, and boasts a cavalcade of guest appearances from some of the most respected and recognizable faces in comedy.

After a somewhat shaky start and unflattering comparisons to its UK predecessor – the Amercian version of The Office is now one of the most acclaimed series on television, standing strongly on its own merit. Says Entertainment Weekly – “Thanks to the fearless Steve Carell, an ever-stronger supporting cast, and scripts that spew American corporate absurdist vernacular with perfect pitch, this undervalued remake does the near impossible—it honors Ricky Gervais’ original and works on its own terms”. Indeed it was recently included in Time Magazines “100 Best TV Shows of All-Time”. The comedy, based on the British hit of the same name, lays bare the lives of a handful of listless, young and middle-aged adults who toil in a paper supply company. As they discuss their respective personal lives, the gang shares daily concerns about layoffs, rivalries and promotions – and keeps a watchful eye on the inevitable office politics. Steve Carell (that of Evan Almighty, 40 Year Old Virgin and very soon Get Smart fame) stars as regional manager Michael Scott, who believes he’s the office funny-man and a fountain of business wisdom. (His staff may not necessarily agree).

The Office (Season 3) and 30 Rock premiere July 9th at 7.30 and 8.00pm respectively, on C4.

It was only the other night, watching Seinfeld re-runs that I wondered what Seinfeld himself has been up to recently when this morning we’re sent a press release that he will guest star as himself of 30 Rock!

We’ll have to wait a while before the episode screens in New Zealand, as he appears in the first episode of the second season which airs in the US on October 4.

“I was thrilled to be asked to guest star on NBC’s hit comedy ’30 Rock’. I think it’s going to be so refreshing for me to be playing myself in a show that has nothing to do with neurotic, dysfunctional New York characters,” said Jerry Seinfeld.
