7:30pm Friday, April 27 on TV2

We know they’ve got the voice to make it – but have they got that special star quality? It’s American Idol.

The top eight are whittled down to the lucky seven this Saturday, April 21st…who will be left standing? Then on Friday April 27th watch as they perform.

It’s crunch time and this week we see the selection of contestants diminish once more. The fans will go crazy as the top seven contestants are announced on Saturday. Will your favourite contestant make it through?

Then, on Friday the remaining contenders give it their all, in a bid to showcase their voice and personality to the millions of Idol fans. It’s no longer about the judges – it’s about the opinions of the fans and whether or not each individual contestant has the star quality to make it big in Hollywood.

It’s been a while since we had a major entertainment show of our own in New Zealand and while Prime had a crack at this format back in 2008, this time around it’s looking like it’s going to be a much bigger deal.

Firstly, check out the list of audition venues. It’s a 14 city tour!  If you’ve ever seen an episode from the Got Talent franchise, you’ll realise that the auditions are filmed in front of a live audience.  Taking this show to the provinces like this has the potential to be massive. Remember when Rove dominated the Friday night slot? Gosh that seems a looong time ago. Now everyone talks about sitting down to enjoy a few laughs on TV3 thanks to The Graham Norton Show and local shows 7 Days and WANNA-BEn.

My favourite part of 7 Days is the panels choosing captions for the photos, or explanations for a word in the news that week. I haven’t found the viewer caption competition very funny to date, but I think that’s more a limitation of just seeing the words printed on screen versus hearing comedians joke around and bounce ideas off each other.

WANNA-BEn is really growing on me too – I love all the well-known Kiwi cameos and his interactions with American celebrities – especially how they handle his randomness with such dignity and control. Here’s the preview for tonight’s episode (the final for this season): Continue reading »

TMZ has now named the contestant who will be kicked out of American Idol.

Jermaine Jones will be kicked off “American Idol” Wednesday night, after producers learned he concealed the fact that he was arrested twice last years and has outstanding warrants … TMZ has learned.

As we first reported, producers discovered Tuesday that Jermaine had lied about his criminal history and that triggered the decision to confront him on camera Tuesday afternoon.

We’re told one of the incidents involved violence, which was particularly troublesome to producers.  He also lied to cops by giving them fake names both times he was arrested.

“A.I.” sources tell us … Jermaine will appear on the show tomorrow night before he is sent packing.

Over the last few days, we’ve been reporting that Jermaine told producers his father abandoned him 10 years ago, but his dad called TMZ and called B.S. on his son, saying they see each other regularly.

Jermaine began tweeting that he never told producers about his dad abandoning him.  We’re told the producers — who knew Jermaine had made the statement — became generally suspicious and began looking more closely at his background, and that’s what led to the revelation of his criminal history.

TMZ originally reported one of the remaining 12 contestants was about to be kicked out of American Idol for concealing mulitple crimes and having outstanding warrants for their arrest.

A contestant on “American Idol” will be kicked off the show Wednesday because the singer concealed multiple crimes from producers … TMZ has learned.

Sources connected with the show tell us … the contestant — one of the final 12 — was charged with 2 crimes in 2011, one involving violence.  We’re told in both cases the contestant gave a fake name to cops when arrested.

In addition, we’re told the contestant has outstanding warrants — again, the singer concealed it from producers.

We’re told the contestant was confronted with the information on camera today and the footage will air on Wednesday’s show.
