HISTORY CHANNEL – Sunday 4 January, 6.30pm

In recent years there have been a number of extraordinary discoveries of ships from the ancient world. But what do these finds say about the societies which created them, and the techniques they used in their construction? Probably one of the most stunning examples of an ancient ship is one discovered in Egypt in 1954, in a burial pit, next to the tomb of King Khufu. Known as the `Khufu Boat’, it was 43 meters in length and 6 meters wide. It was buried in 2551 BC to help the great Pharaoh on his journey into the afterlife. What surprised scholars was the quality of the preservation of the boat; this meant that the secrets of its construction were there for the world to see. The boat is a stunning example of ancient ship-building techniques. It was a superb piece of engineering.
