In 2008, the 20-year-old Kiwi beat the then world No. 22, Vera Zvonareva, in three sets in the quarterfinals, to make the semifinals. The 2008 ASB Classic boasts a world-class line-up, including three-time Grand Slam singles winner Lindsay Davenport, one of the best female tennis players of recent times. The former world No. 1 is the first player in the history of the event to have ever held that position, and has made an impressive return to the circuit after the birth of her first child in June.
Davenport is a ‘dangerous unseeded’ player in a draw headed by world No. 23 Vera Zvonareva, a finalist in Auckland for the past two seasons. Former champ Katarina Serbotnik is the second seed. New Zealand will be represented by two wildcard places; top Kiwi Marina Erakovic who is ranked 165th in the world and came close to making the quarter-finals in 2007, and by Sasha Jones who is ranked 323rd.
