After overhearing some of his old newsroom buddies commenting on his fall from fame, Chuck (Kelsey Grammer) tries to manipulate Kelly (Patricia Heaton) so that he can cover the lead story on the hilarious Back to You, screening Thursday, September 18th at 7:30pm on 3.

Putting their popular former television characters behind them for their hilarious new sitcom Patricia Heaton and Kelsey Grammer recently spoke to Entertainment Tonight about just how challenging it can be to reshape their television personas.

“When you have a show that became as iconic as Everybody Loves Raymond, you’re just thinking, ‘What could I do that will not make people forget about ‘Raymond,’ but accept something that would be different for me to do,'” says Heaton of her initial struggles with her new character.

“I’m conscious about trying not to repeat Frasier,” agrees Grammer. “[My character] is a different guy – he’s a lot less complicated than Frasier was; he’s not as tortured as Frasier was and some of that grand, stylistically sort of mid-Atlantic stuff I used to do as Frasier doesn’t really ring true with this guy.”

On Back To You Heaton plays Kelly Carr, an uptight news anchor whose life takes a turn for the worse when after ten years apart she is once again partnered with Chuck Darling (Grammer).

So, how different is Grammer’s new character from the Frasier Crane we all know and love?

“This guy leads from the libido and lower,” he jokes. “He’s a bit of a dinosaur. He’s wrestling with what the new news is [compared to] what it was when he was growing up, when Walter Cronkite was to be emulated and that sort of stuff.”

Heaton’s character also has a serious work ethic as a journalist – but no matter how hard she tries, Grammer ‘s character always seems to grab the spotlight.

“She works really hard and Chuck gets all the attention and it’s so unfair,” she says. “I just love that she’s always trying to top him and trying to do her best and it’s never enough.”

So how will she react to Chuck trying to manipulate her to allow him to cover the lead story? Find out when the laughs continue on Back to You on Thursday, September 18th at 7:30pm on 3.

Hoping to prove to Kelly (Patricia Heaton) that he’s a changed man, Chuck (Kelsey Grammer) does his best to care for a goldfish he received as a gift, but suffers a comedy of errors on the hilarious new comedy, Back to You, screening Thursday, September 4th at 7:30pm on 3.

Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton are definitely the two star attractions of the new series; however Fred Willard, who portrays Marsh McGinley on Back to You, may just be the unsung comical hero of the show.

Marsh is the latest in a gallery of grinning goofballs that Willard has given us over the course of a career that spans over 40 years, however the veteran actor says that in real life he is often the opposite to his stereotypical characters.

“If I’m in a good mood and around people I feel really comfortable with, I can be the life of the party. But I can also be the guy at the table who people turn to and say, “You’re awfully quiet.”

However “quiet” is certainly not a trait that Willard shares with was one of his most memorable characters – Fernwood 2-Night’s Jerry Hubbard. It was on Fernwood 2-Night where the actor was first introduced as a character with verbal diarrhoea.

“I think it was the first time I ever played a character who never thought twice before he said something. And there’s been kind of a through line into the things I did with most of my characters.”

And this seems to have carried through to Back to You’s Marsh, who Willard absolutely loves and thoroughly enjoys playing in the series.

“I love it that he’s a sports guy and that he says whatever comes to his mind,” says Willard of whacky Marsh.

“He doesn’t think things through too much. Nothing seems to perturb him. It’s pretty much opposite to the way I am in real life – I tend to over think things.”

And it’s this “not over thinking things” that makes for such comedy gold on the new series.

Make sure to catch more offbeat one-liners from Marsh when Back to You screens on Thursday, September 4th at 7:30pm on 3.

Back to you

Thursday, August 28th at 7:30pm

Comedy fans will finally witness the highly-anticipated union of two Emmy Award-winning actors, Kelsey Grammer (Frasier) and Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond), when Back to You premieres on Thursday, August 28th at 7:30pm on 3.

The new comedy series centres on a pair of star news anchors with on-air chemistry and off-air conflict who find themselves working together again after 10 years apart.

Grammer, who earned a pair of Golden Globes and five Emmy awards for his portrayal of the snobbishly intelligent Dr. Frasier Crane on Frasier, now essays the role of the less than stellar yet egotistical Chuck Darling on the new hilarious comedy.

Back to You also marks a reunion of sorts for Grammer and fellow Frasier colleagues, Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd. Lloyd and Levitan both served as writers and executive producers on Frasier and are now co-creators of Back to You.

The three Frasier veterans recently spoke about making the transition from their old series to their new one.

“Frasier was so complicated, so messed up, whereas Chuck is really a simpleton,” Grammer admits. “He’s not the smartest guy in the world, smart enough to get by, not a bad storyteller, but he’s an egomaniac where Frasier was not.”

“We quite often, on a daily basis, say, `OK, what would Frasier do here, and let’s do the opposite,'” Levitan reveals. “Even though there are going to be a lot of people who still think of him as Frasier, we hope in time that they will see him as Chuck Darling. I know we have.”

Levitan also opened up about the choice of Patricia Heaton for their female lead, saying that she’s a perfect ying to Grammer’s yang.

“What makes Patty [Patricia Heaton] so important to us is that she’s one of those rare actresses who can go toe-to-toe with Kelsey, who can be just as strong as he is in a way that doesn’t make her seem un-likable,” Levitan says. “From the beginning, Kelsey locked into Patricia as the right person for that role.”

Tonight’s season premiere sees the newly desperate Chuck Darling revisit his old Pittsburgh co-anchor roots after an embarrassing on-air tirade makes its way onto the internet.

Following some contemplation about his downward-moving career and his lifestyle of chasing women, he decides to make his comeback by sharing a news desk with old co-anchor Kelly Carr (Heaton), in spite of all the quarrelling behind the cameras. Now, the pressure is on both of them as they attempt to take their newscast back to number one.

Make sure not to miss this hilarious new comedy when Back to You premieres on Thursday, August 28th at 7:30pm on 3.

Kelsey Grammer is resting in hospital after suffering a mild heart attack at his home in Hawaii. He is expected to make a full recovery.
