Beginning tonight on TV ONE is the award-winning comedy Benidorm, set at a package holiday resort in one of the more infamous destinations on the Costa Blanca.

The Solana apartments play host to a variety of Brits aboard, all looking for one thing: value for money. And they certainly get it. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, all snacks, alcohol and soft drinks are included in the holiday, not forgetting “quality” entertainment in The Red Lion cabaret bar.

Tonight, Benidorm regulars the Garveys arrive from Yorkshire for their annual respite, only to find family matriarch, Madge living in squalor in a caravan park. But not before an encounter with special guest, holiday-maker Cilla Black.

Swingers Donald and Jacqueline are also in residence poolside at The Solana, and ever willing to indulge in their penchant for a bit of fruity fun.

Hairdresser Gavin has brought his employee Kenneth with him to Benidorm on an all-expenses paid trip. What sounded like a good idea quickly becomes a nightmare as Kenneth’s insatiable appetite for men and food begins to grate on Gavin’s nerves.

New to The Solana are Sam and Natalie, two “lovely” young ladies from the north of England. With Natalie on the receiving end of constant attention from barman Mateo amongst others, best friend Sam is less than happy.

The Solana has a new bartender too, in the form of Les. Les is delighted, not only to have been offered the job by manager Janey, but also to find out that she has no objections to him coming to work dressed as a woman. As he and Mateo battle it out for control of the poolside bar, Les’s son Liam enjoys his first taste of holiday romance as he tries to woo Natalie.

Now in its fifth season in the UK, Benidorm has been a smash hit, winning the comedy programme award at the National Television Awards in both 2008 and 2011, and nominated for 2012.

Producers have announced a feature-length Benidorm movie is also in the works and will be released in 2013.

The series is filmed at the Hotel Sol Pelicanos-Ocas in Benidorm and many of the extras featured are local expats.

9:30pm Thursday, December 1 on TV One

It’s Christmas on the Costa Blanca and where better to spend it than in Benidorm with some of The Solana’s best loved regulars and some very special guests!

Welcome to the award-winning Benidorm, and the world of the package holiday resort, where each summer Brits abroad flock to The Solana apartments to soak up the sun, sand and all- inclusive cocktails. Not forgetting the “quality” entertainment found in the The Red Lion cabaret bar.

In this one-off festive special, it’s Christmas and Benidorm regulars the Garveys ( Steve Pemberton, League of Gentlemen, Siobhan Finneran, Downton Abbey, and Oliver Stokes) are spending it with family, Mel and Madge Harvey, in their luxury hilltop villa.

Elderly Noreen (Elsie Kelly, Coronation Street) has found herself a travel companion in the form of Clive (Brian Murphy, Last of the Summer Wine), an old army friend of her husband, but as the holiday progresses it appears he might not be quite all he seems.

There’s confusion too at The Solana, when Donald and Jaqueline (Kenny Ireland, House of Cards and Janine Duvitsky, One Foot in the Grave ) check in with a group of “close personal friends” including king of the swingers, Marvin (Louie Spence, Pineapple Dance Studios).

With Mel unexpectedly stuck in Marrakech, Madge (Shelia Reid) is left in charge of the Christmas Spectacular at the Benidorm Palace. But when the star of the show, Su Pollard (Hi-De-Hi) takes an unexpected detour via a Spanish nudist camp, it looks like the show will be left without its big finish.

Luck comes in the unlikely form of Donald and Jaqueline, who just happen to have a famous friend in the area who they hope to convince to step in at the last minute and save the show.

Long live the land of sun, sangria and Santa!

11:05pm Friday, November 5 on TV One

Comedian Johnny Vegas returns for a new series of Benidorm, promising sun, sea, sangria and its biggest fiesta yet, tonight at 11.05pm on TV ONE.

In series three, the holidaymakers are all back for their free holiday at The Solana Apartments that they received as compensation after being taken hostage by a drug dealer last year.

Mel (Geoffrey Hutchings) is determined to promote his business interests, starting by buying a mobility scooter outlet and giving Madge (Sheila Reid) a new top of the range scooter. Mel decides that Mick (Steve Pemberton) is going to be working for him whether he likes it or not, and Janice (Siobhan Finneran) does her best to stop the family from throttling each other.

Meanwhile The Oracle (Vegas) looks for love with the unwanted support of his mum Noreen (Elsie Kelly) with hilarious and often disastrous results.

Martin (Nicholas Burns) has separated from his wife, Kate (Abigail Cruttenden), and arrives on the holiday with the unpredictable Brandy, a young girl he met in a self-help group – The Lion Within – who certainly keeps on his toes guessing what her next move will be.

UKTV – Fridays from 28 May, 9pm

Benidorm is a comedy set in an all-inclusive holiday resort in one of the more infamous destinations on the Costa Blanca. The Solana apartments play host to a variety of clientele, all looking for one thing – value for money – and they certainly get it. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, all snacks, alcohol and soft drinks are included in the holiday, not forgetting the ‘quality’ entertainment in The Red Lion cabaret bar. More reliant on detailed portraits of the working-class characters than traditional sitcom set-ups, Benidorm probably has more in common with The Royle Family than Duty Free. On their last day, the Garveys win a family holiday to The Santiago for the following year thus ensuring more fun in the sun with Santiago regulars Donald and Jacqueline and more new holidaymakers drawn to all-inclusive Costa Blanca heaven.

In the second series all the cast are back for eight episodes in the ‘Beni’ land of karaoke and all-day English breakfasts. Telle has come with her six-month-old baby; ‘Coolio’, and Madge has come with her new ‘boyfriend’ Mel – owner of five sunbed shops and Didbury’s answer to Julio Iglesias. Is romance in the air or will he pop his clogs before she gets a chance to marry him? Complete with arm wrestling competitions, low-rent bull fights, wheelchair duels in the sun and some big guest stars, series two of Benidorm will be even sunnier and funnier than the first.

Starring: Steve Pemberton (Psychoville, Doctor Who), Paul Bazely (Moving Wallpaper, Trial & Retribution) and Sheila Reid (Place of Execution, Bones).
