Ruud Kleinpaste’s passion for ecology started when he was a youngster. Born in Indonesia, Ruud moved to New Zealand in 1978 after studying silviculture, animal ecology and conservation at university in his native Holland. Since then, many New Zealanders have become familiar with Ruud’s work through his books, columns and his appearances on numerous radio and television show. Buggin’ With Ruud is a dream come true for the enthusiastic entomologist as he ventures to entertain and educate millions of viewers about bugs large and small. Tonight: Amazon Kill Or Cure. Travelling in the Amazon is not easy. If the climate and terrain don’t get you, the bugs will. But for Ruud it’s all worth it because he’s on a mission: to meet with a remote community of tribespeople, the Piaroans, who hunt and eat the world’s biggest arachnid: the Goliath Bird Eating spider. A dramatic turn of events cuts short his adventure and brings him face to face with some of the worst experiences of his career.

Australia is infamous for dangerous sharks, poisonous snakes and an array of biting, stinging creatures. Ruud boldly sets off to find out how Aussie bugs compare on the aggravation scale. The verdict: Some are cute and benign, others could eat you out of house and home, and a notorious number have super-painful stings in their tails.

He introduces viewers to some of the biggest spiders, stick insects and beetles on the planet as well as a wide range of butterflies dressed to impress the opposite sex, including the world’s biggest butterfly — the Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing Butterfly.
