Comedy Gala 2007

Comedy Gala Wednesday May 9 and Friday May 11 – 9.30pm

The Hollywood event of New Zealand comedy returns to the small screen for the 15th annual Comedy Gala, screening on TV2 at 9.30pm on Wednesday, May 9 and at 9.30pm on Friday, May 11.

The 15th annual Comedy Gala is filmed live for TV. It is a fast-paced, two-hour extravaganza showcasing the very best of the comedy that will have New Zealand in stitches for the three weeks of madness that make up the 2007 NZ International Comedy Festival. Along with the gowns and glamour, this popular festival event will abound with the best thigh-slapping and side-splitting humour from the international and local comedy scene.
Hosted by Irish comedy legend, Ardal O’Hanlon – star of the hit TV show Father Ted – the Comedy Gala features the comedy creme de la creme, including Ed Byrne (Ireland), Carl Barron (Australia), Ewen Gilmour (New Zealand) and Phil Nichol (Canada). The groupies, celebrities and fans of comedy will be out in force for the stunning line-up of more than 20 comedians in the 2007 Comedy Gala.

Multi award-winning comedian and actor Ardal O’Hanlon is one of the most acclaimed artists in the comedy industry. Ardal has an extensive list of acting and comedy television credits to his name. As a live performer, Ardal’s stand-up act is a spellbinding fusion of off-beat stories and polished material combined to make a hilarious journey touched with life-enhancing observations and unexpected twists. His sheer originality and talent ensures there is no other performer quite like him. Ardal has toured extensively as a live performer in the United States, Canada, Italy, Holland, Australia and New Zealand.

Ardal recently starred as the presenter of Leagues Apart and had the lead role in Ben Elton’s comedy series, Blessed. It was, however, his consummate starring role in three series of the BAFTA-winning series Father Ted, which propelled him to public attention with his hilarious portrayal of Father Dougal McGuire. This role won him the Top Television Comedy Newcomer in 1995, and nominations for Best Actor in 1996 and Top Television Personality and Best Actor in 1997, 1998 and 1999, along with Best Comedy Actor at the 1999 BAFTA Awards.

Last year the Comedy Gala was a sell-out event and the fastest-selling event in the history of the festival. With yet another hilarious and star-studded line up, the 2007 Comedy Gala promises to be the most sensational start to the festival of outstanding comedy.
