coronation-streetThere was an article in the Herald at the end of last year about Coronation Street’s move to Friday and how TVNZ claimed the change had prompted “very little feedback”.  The reasoning was for declining year on year ratings. The fact that we’re 18 months behind the UK is one thing but there is another element to this which seems to have been overlooked – The lead in: Seven Sharp.

In 2012, the average audience leading in to Coronation Street on TV One was 447,118 viewers.  There was a 3% drop in viewers, resulting in Coronation Street having an average audience of 435,312 viewers per episode. Continue reading »

Freebies 2013Shortland Street has edged out Coronation Street in the battle for the best TV show at the 2013 Freeview Awards.

The winning margin was a narrow 35 votes with Tv2’s Revenge taking the third place spot.

TV One reigned supreme in the best channel category ahead of TV2.

Freeview General Manager Sam Irvine believes the results are great for local TV.

“As Kiwis we like to see ourselves on TV, hear our accent and watch characters who deal with the same issues in life as we do,” he said. Continue reading »

William RoacheScenes featuring Ken Barlow are being edited out of Coronation Street following the news that actor William Roache has been charged with rape.

The actor, who was in New Zealand last month for the Coronation Street On Stage events, has been charged with two counts of raping a 15-year-old girl in 1967.

ITV will be editing out scenes featuring Roache’s character for UK broadcast while the investigations continue but he will remain in scenes here in New Zealand. Continue reading »


The first official photo of the new Coronation Street set has been released by ITV in the UK.

The new set is located at the new MediaCityUK site on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal to allow for “greater production flexibility”.

An official statement released this week states that “19 different different types of brick, seven types of mortar and a whole heap of cobbles” were used in the construction. Continue reading »

William-Roache-GMThe UK media has picked up on another comment made by Coronation Street actor William Roache in New Zealand this week.

After getting a savaging in the tabloids for his comments regarding victims of sexual assault on TVNZ’s Sunday, the British media is again criticising the 80-year-old this time for a piece of innuendo on Good Morning.

During a cooking segment with Jeanette Thomas, Roache went to chop a tomato but discovered that Thomas had already done so. Continue reading »
