Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park, The Right Stuff) is joining the cast of Criminal Intent as Detective Zach Nichols when the hit Dick Wolf series returns to 3 for an unmissable eighth season on Sunday, May 31st at 9:30pm.

Goldblum will be replacing Criminal Intent veteran Chris Noth and according to Executive Producer Dick Wolf the actor will be adding a certain type of “Goldblum” flavour to the hit crime series.

“Jeff’s presence will add a new dimension to an already successful show,” Wolf reveals to Zap2it. Also giving praise for the departing Noth, saying that “Chris has been a member of the Law & Order family since the beginning, and [his character] Mike Logan is one of the most popular detectives in the history of television.”

As for his part, Goldblum could not be more thrilled to be joining the hit series which he says will allow him to portray a very unique character.

“Sometimes acting is uncomfortable,” he says. “Sometimes you go, ‘Why am I doing this? This is painful.’ But on the other side of it, you constantly taste the fruits of it. This sweet fruit of connectedness with other people, connectedness with myself, something delicious.”

The actor also says he approach the part of Nichols the way he does his other roles – part psychologically, part emotionally.

“There’s always something shocking, some violent crime, but my parents in these stories are shrinks, and I have this psychological bent,” he says. “And I think I’m not only helping civically to bring people to justice, we’ve done something which will help their soul’s evolution.”

But despite the good work of his character, Goldblum adds that portraying Nichols can sometimes be a bit challenging, he says; “I can be complacent or frightened, so it’s good for me to be forced to confront with things that cause me to open myself up and go beyond my fears.”

Make sure not to miss the star when Detective Zach Nichols undertakes his first case in the eighth season opener of Criminal Intent, premiering on Sunday, May 31st 9:30pm on 3.
