Burrell sells new comedy

Modern Family actor Ty Burrell has sold a new autobiographical comedy pilot to the ABC network. Burrell is developing the project, which focusses on two city families who buy a general store in a small Oregon community, with his younger brother Duncan.

A documentary following the final days of former Spartacus actor Andy Whitfield has reached its target budget after appealing to the public to help fund it. $200,000 was raised after the call went out earlier this month.

This week’s double episode instalment of CSI: NY sees the CSIs reeling as the Compass Killer continues to wreck havoc. In “Cuckoo’s Nest” at 8.30pm, the Compass Killer (Skeet Ulrich) claims his third victim when a body plummets from the 59th Street Bridge. A compass pointing east is discovered near the body. Then in “Manhattanhenge”, Mac and the team lose the Compass Killer at the World’s Fair site, and it’s only a matter of time before he targets the next victim.

Edelstein leaving House

House actress Lisa Edelstein has announced that she will be leaving the medical drama. Edelstein, who plays Dr Lisa Cuddy, confirmed that she will not be returning for the show’s eighth season.

CSI: NY renewed, Criminal Minds spinoff axed

CSI: NY has been renewed by CBS for another season while Criminal Minds spinoff Criminal Minds: Suspect Behaviour has been given the axe. The Forest Whitaker –starring spinoff lasted only one season on the air.

One Tree Hill renewed for ninth season

Teen drama One Tree Hill has been renewed by the CW in the US for a ninth season. 

Fox to guest on Curb Your Enthusiasm

Michael J. Fox will guest star on an episode of Larry David’s comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm. The former Spin City actor will play himself during his appearance.

Boardwalk Empire wins at SAGs

Boardwalk Empire has continued its success in awards season by picking up two awards at yesterday’s Screen Actors Guild Awardsfor Outstanding Ensemble, Drama Series and for Outstanding Male Actor in a Drama for Steve Buscemi. Modern Family claimed Outstanding Ensemble, Comedy Series while Betty White was honoured for her role in comedy series Hot In Cleveland.

Directors Guild honours Boardwalk Empire, Modern Family

Boardwalk Empire and Modern Family have also proved successful at the recent Directors Guild Awards by claiming the top prizes for drama and comedy. Boardwalk Empire scooped the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Dramatic Series award while Modern Family took the same award for comedy.

Piers Morgan’s ratings drop by 75%

Piers Morgan has seen his ratings drop by 75% for his new CNN talkshow in the US, after drawing only 498,000 viewers for the latest episode. Piers Morgan Tonight peaked on January 17 with 2.1 million during his interview with Oprah Winfrey but dropped substantially for his chat with Kardashian sisters, Kim and Kourtney.

Vampire Diaries actor to guest on CSI: NY

Vampire Diaries actor Taylor Kinney will join CSI: NY for a guest role later in the show’s current season. Kinney, who played Mason on The Vampire Diaries, has also appeared in Bones.

CSI: NY replaces actress

CSI: NY has been quick to fill the void left by departing actress Melina Kanakaredes with an announcement today saying Emmy-winning actress Sela Ward will join the cast. Ward’s previous credits include House, Sisters, and Once and Again.

Promotion for Glee actor

Glee’s Mike O’Malley has been promoted to a series regular for the second season after receiving an Emmy nod for ‘Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series’. The actor, who plays Kurt’s dad Burt Hummel in the series, joins Heather Morris (Brittany) and Nay Rivera (Santana) in receiving promotions.

Zefron guests on Robot Chicken special

Zac Efron will join the voice acting team at Robot Chicken for a Star Wars parody special alongside C3PO voice artist Anthony Daniels. The Robot Chicken series, which screens on Adult Swim, is co-created by actor Seth Green.

Oprah TV biopic on the way

A TV biopic centring on daytime star Oprah Winfrey is in the works with producers looking at a two to four hour production. Both known and unknown actresses are said to be intended for auditions to play the TV personality.

Glee’s Brittany to step up

Glee’s planned Britney Spears episode for next season will reportedly feature series regular Brittany (Heather Morris) singing two of the popstar’s tracks. Although the character has played a largely supporting role over the first season, her role will be beefed up for the second run.

CSI: NY loses key cast member

CSI: NY will lose a series regular next season with news Melina Kanakaredes is exiting the crime procedural. The actress, who plays Stella Bonasera, will vacate the show in which she has starred in since 2004 with possible replacements being lined up for the seventh season.

Huge World Cup final audiences

A staggering 91% of TV audiences in Spain and The Netherlands watched their teams battle it out in the FIFA World Cup final yesterday morning in which Spain prevailed 1-0. Meanwhile, early estimates are suggesting the worldwide audience topped 700 million viewers.

Doctor Who for Taggart?

Producers of largely-forgotten police drama Taggart are chasing ex-Doctor Who star David Tennant for a role on the show. The Scottish crime series are desperate for the actor to appear despite turning him down six times prior to his success on Doctor Who.

Lost DVD details

Details have been revealed regarding the Lost final season DVD box-set which is due for release later this year. The DVD will feature the much-hyped bonus scene featuring Hurley (Jorge Garcia) and Ben (Michael Emerson) as part of around 30 hours of bonus material.

Gambon joins Doctor Who special

Celebrated British actor Sir Michael Gambon has signed on to appear in the Doctor Who Christmas special at the end of the year. Big name guest stars are no stranger to Doctor Who specials with the likes of Kylie Minogue and David Morrissey featuring in previous years.

Joan Cusack guests on Law & Order: SVU

Actress Joan Cusack will make a guest appearance on an upcoming episode of law & Order: SVU after signing on to play the mother of a girl who disappears. The Oscar-nominated actress will feature alongside former Lost actor Henry Ian Cusick.
