Danger Men

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC – Monday 31 August, 7.30pm

Construction is one of the most dangerous industries in the world, with 1200 construction workers killed each year in America alone, and wind turbine construction is toughest job of all. In this final episode of Danger Men, the Wild Wind Workers take on Mother Nature. Facing terrifying heights, gigantic parts and massive machinery, these men battle the elements to build wind farms. Standing at 260 feet, with a Rotor the size of a Boeing 747, each turbine costs £1million to build. At no time can these men let their minds wander off what they’re doing; otherwise they may be injured or worse still, killed. We go to Etheridge, Montana – one of the windiest areas in the U.S. This inhospitable terrain is perfect for wind turbines, but as the construction workers find out, the wind can be so strong at the top of the turbines that it’s impossible to stand up. This makes connecting the rotor the most dangerous part. As gusts pick up, the blade will try to rotate – and if they are not connected properly, they will come down – resulting in the loss of life…
