Death of the Highlands

THE HISTORY CHANNEL – Monday 4 August, 7.00pm

A moving history series tracing the landscape, lives and legacy of the Highland Clearances in which the Scottish highlands population were forced to relocate in the 18th and 19th century. Presented by Taggart star John Michie, it journeys through the geography and history of Scotland, as he reveals the story of how the highlands went from thriving communities to beautiful but barren landscapes. It charts 200 turbulent years of Scotland’s past – from the 17th Century when James VI of Scotland became James I of England, uniting the crowns, via the Jacobite Uprisings that almost finished the Highlanders, until the 1800s when those that remained were killed or driven from the land they’d worked for generations, not because of warfare, but to make way for the more profitable sheep flocks. Death of the Highlands is an amazing story of terror, treachery and ultimately, tragedy.
