This week sees the highly anticipated return of Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse when the series enters its action-packed second season on Monday, September 19th at 9:30pm on FOUR.

In last year’s season one finale, Eliza Dushku’s Echo received a whole slew of personalities, which caused a huge shortage in her brain. So how will Echo deal this season?

“Basically, through force of will,” Whedon explains. “She did have all those personalities dumped into her at once and as we pick up, we’re going to find out that that’s starting to affect her.”

“She’s much more directed and driven, and even in her doll state, is growing, and learning and starting to try to access these personalities to see what they can help her with, because she has a mission that she understands now, which is to get back to her personality and get everybody back to theirs.”

What about the other dolls? Whedon says that Victor (Enver Gjokaj) and Sierra (Dichen Lachman) will continue to discover their relationship, but it may get dirty. Mellie (Miracle Laurie), who was last seen being set free from the dollhouse, will return fairly early in the season. “There’s going to be some pain involved,” Whedon says.

Katy Perry on The Simpsons

A few months after Katy Perry’s banned Sesame Street cameo, the singer has pushed the boundaries again on a special live action episode of The Simpsons. Perry appeared in another racy outfit, playing up the fact that her last appearance on a kids show led to it being cut due to complaints by parents of too much cleavage.

McHale signs on for more Soup

Joel McHale has extended his contract to host E! Channel series The Soup. McHale will continue hosting the pop culture show for at least another two years, working around his current role on comedy series Community.

Oprah arrives in Australia

Oprah Winfrey has arrived in Sydney for the start of her Australia-wide tour which includes two live shows to be filmed at the Sydney Opera House. Tourism Australia bankrolled the trip, spending $3m to get the talk show host down under.

Dushku pulls out of pilot

Dollhouse actress Eliza Dushku has pulled out of new pilot Bird Dog just a week after she signed up for it. The actress was due to play one-half of a father-daughter crime fighting team. 

Misfits pulls three awards nominations

C4 series Misfits has been nominated for three awards at the upcoming 2011 Broadcast Awards in the UK in the categories of Best Drama Series, Best Multichannel Programme and Best New programme. New Prime series Being Human is also up for the Best Multichannel Programme.

Vampire Diaries spin-off?

The creator of drama series The Vampire Diaries is looking to develop a spin-off which would run as a companion series. The series is in the very early stages of development currently.

Fran Drescher series picked up

A new Fran Drescher series, which centres on the actresses divorce, has been picked up in the US. The series will parallel Drescher’s real life by focussing on a woman who struggled to get back into the dating world after discovering that her husband is gay.

Seacrest signs TV development deal

American Idol host Ryan Seacrest has signed a $60m deal with a US media conglomerate to develop TV content, a record label and a concert series. Seacrest will still continue his work on American Idol and his radio show in Los Angeles.

Dollhouse actress lands new pilot role

Dollhouse actress Eliza Dushku has signed on to appear in a new drama pilot called Bird Dog. The actress will feature in the pilot which centres on a father-daughter crime-fighting team who solve crimes in a sleepy rural town.

Goodfellas TV series in the works

A TV series based on 1990 gangster movie Goodfellas is in
the works, with Warner Bros TV the frontrunner to produce the series.
Screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi, who wrote the original Martin Scorsese movie, is
expected to write the script for the pilot.

Familiar face returns to Home and Away

Home and Away will welcome back a familiar face towards the end of the year with the return of a well-known cast member. The actor/actress was a series regular a decade ago and was – surprise surprise – a foster child.

The Simpsons named top TV brand

The Simpsons have been named the most lucrative TV brand of
all time, with a global retail sales total of more than $US8 million. Sesame
Street took second place followed by Looney Tunes in third.

Buffy actress joins Grey’s

Former Buffy The Vampire Slayer actress Amber Benson will
appear on the upcoming season of Grey’s Anatomy in at least one episode. Benson
has previously appeared on Grey’s spinoff series private Practice.

Phoenix apologizes for Letterman appearance

Joaquin Phoenix has apologised for his infamous appearance
on The Late Show with David Letterman where he turned up in dark shades,
slurring his words and giving monosyllabic answers. Phoenix and filmmaker Casey
Affleck have since announced that it was all part of an elaborate hoax for
their new film I’m Still Here.

Dushku to guest on Big Bang

Dollhouse actress Eliza Dushku will join the cast of The Big
Bang Theory for an episode in the next season of the comedy series. Dushku will
play an FBI agent  who interviews the
boys.
