Escape To Chimp Eden

ANIMAL PLANET – Saturdays from 26 June, 9.30pm

Deep in the heart of South Africa, the Jane Goodall Institute’s Chimpanzee Eden Sanctuary is a place of rebirth and renewal for more than two dozen chimps, most of whom suffered horrible lives in human captivity. Sanctuary director, Eugene Cussons, has travelled throughout Africa at great personal risk, to give these chimps the chance of a meaningful and fulfilling life. For Eugene however, the dream extends beyond the sanctuary itself. He is convinced that through intense hands-on rehabilitation, he can teach these remarkable animals the skills they need to survive in the wild. This all new season presents the powerful, on-going drama of struggle and devotion, as it highlights the emotional and moving saga of one man’s unique bond with our closest primate cousins and his fierce dedication to their survival.

ANIMAL PLANET – Mondays from 15 February, 9.30pm

Deep in the heart of South Africa is a sanctuary for chimpanzees that have been rescued from the horrors of human captivity. Many of these chimps have never felt grass under their feet, never learned to climb a tree and have never known companionship. However, at the Jane Goodall Institute Chimp Eden South Africa, they will be cared for in a safe and loving environment and rehabilitated into ordinary, wild chimps again. Overseeing the sanctuary is Eugene Cussons, who travels to war torn African countries to rescue tormented chimps no one else is willing to save. He works hands on with these challenging chimps, all whilst risking his own personal safety. Chimps can have the mental capacity of a 5 year old child with the strength of 6 men, so handling troubled chimps can be an extremely dangerous task. Acting like a surrogate parent, Eugene spends countless hours teaching them basic skills like climbing trees and foraging for food. From rescue to rehabilitation, this compelling and emotional series witnesses the development of a strong bond between Eugene and the chimps.
