TV ONE’s inspiring series, First Crossings follows two modern day New Zealand adventurers, Kevin Bigger and Jamie Fitzgerald, as they recreate the journeys of pioneer New Zealand explorers.

But Kevin and Jamie are not only following in their footsteps, they’ll be experiencing some of the same conditions and dangers the original explorers faced. They’ll wear the same clothing and footwear, eat the same food, and use the same equipment.

Tonight in the season finale, Kevin and Jamie retrace the great journey of Thomas Brunner and his guide Kehu across the Buller River in 1846.

Jamie and Kevin pit themselves against the raw and unpredictable Buller River – firstly, travelling alongside it, before attempting to raft down it.

Finally, the pair unexpectedly discovers just how dangerous the Buller is, as they are washed down stream with near tragic results – for the adventurers and their cameraman.

Tonight, Kevin and Jamie retrace the unbelievable survival story of David Loweniston and nine other stranded sealers, who were marooned on the Open Bay Islands in 1810.

Put ashore on a small island, Kevin and Jamie discover the sealers’ original hut, thought to be the oldest surviving European-made stone structure in New Zealand. They must then travel to the mainland in an old sealing boat, before attempting to cross the Southern Alps.

In the shadow of Mount Cook, Kevin and Jamie must traverse through crevice filled glaciers, before climbing a rock wall likened to a vertical bowling alley.

Finally, they must make their way across a thin ice shelf before overcoming the altitude-sapping, last haul to the summit.

Over the past ten years, Kevin and Jamie have taken on some of the world’s toughest adventures, from rowing across the Atlantic to walking unaided to the South Pole. Now, they have a new challenge.

Kevin and Jamie are setting out to relive the epic journeys of New Zealand’s early explorers and will confront some of the toughest terrain this country has to offer. Together, they will attempt to cross the Southern Alps, navigate the hanging valleys of Fiordland, and stay afloat on the treacherous seas of the Open Bay Islands.
