Footballers’ Wives

Footballers’ Wives Friday 20 July, 9.35pm

Zöe Lucker returns as Tanya Turner in tonight’s episode of ‘Footballers’ Wives’, at 9.35pm on TV ONE. With Amber sectioned with a bleed on the brain, it’s safe for Turner to return. On the plane back to Britain she meets the hot new Earls Park signing, Brazilian Paulo Bardosa (Jay Rodan), and the chemistry is electric.

Lucker says it’s great to be back in Tanya’s shoes. “Tanya doesn’t change – she’s as manipulative as ever and up to the same old tricks. She meets her toughest female match in Eva de Wolffe and she enjoys the sparring.”
Having spied Paulo on her flight, Tanya is quick to manipulate a meeting, she says. “They get very close on the flight and there is an attraction from the first moment they meet. He’s attractive to her on two levels – his looks, and because he’s going to be the one that can get her back into Earls Park.”

It’s just a shame Paulo’s got a partner – the formidable publisher, glamorous Eva de Wolffe (Joan Collins). The top international magazine editor is orchestrating Tre (Chucky Venice) and Liberty’s (Phina Oruche) wedding. It is Egyptian-themed and no expense has been spared. Tanya Turner blags herself an invite, much to Eva’s disgust, in the hope she can get close to Paulo. Tanya is a woman on a mission – now that she’s tasted Paulo, she wants more – and she’s not letting Eva stand in her way.

But Eva De Wolffe is a force to be reckoned with and she and Tanya are set to clash at every turn. Both as hard as diamonds and as cold as ice – perhaps Tanya Turner has at last met her true adversary.

Lucker, who visited New Zealand to perform in the stage play ‘Then Comes Love’, says the prospect of working with Collins is what convinced her to return to ‘Footballers’ Wives’. “Joan Collins was amazing. I’ve always been a big fan of hers. She is extremely professional but great fun too. She’s got a wicked sense of humour and is fabulously elegant, but down to earth.”

But Lucker would love to return to New Zealand and see it properly. “I loved New Zealand and I’m desperate to return. I had the most wonderful time and the people I met were all amazing, but I was working so hard I didn’t see all the bits I really wanted to.”

Tonight’s episode of ‘Footballers’ Wives’ sees Tanya Turner clash with ruthless magazine editor Eva De Wolffe as she tries to move in on Eva’s partner, the mysterious Paulo.

Top of its league, the critically acclaimed British series ‘Footballers’ Wives’ begins its fifth season, tonight at 9.30pm on TV ONE. ‘Footballers’ Wives’ follows a group of young women who are wealthy and glamorous – by default. They are the WAGs (Wives and Girlfriends) of the players in Britain’s premier football league.

When the series kicks off, the football season at Earls Park is back on track. The men are out on the pitch scoring goals, whilst the litter of wives and girlfriends have established a hierarchy in the players’ lounge. Newcomer Tremaine Gidigbi (Chucky Venice) is the sensational fresh signing for Earls Park and he arrives with his stunning international model girlfriend, Liberty Baker (Phina Oruche), on his arm.
Then there is the new chairman Garry Ryan (Nicholas Ball). The randy music mogul is at the club helm, having has just bought himself into Earls Park – but does he have what it takes to succeed or could he be in a game he doesn’t understand?

Ball, whose character Garry Ryan crosses over from the spin-off series ‘Footballers’ Wives: Extra Time’, describes Ryan as “devilishly handsome”: “He is a true rocker at heart and loves the “high-life” but he doesn’t have an honest love of the game. Garry likes to think he gets on with everyone but in reality I don’t think he has really gelled with anyone.”

The role is a whole new ball game for Ball, who admits he had never seen the series before filming. He says despite the cross-over between the two series, his role in ‘Footballers’ Wives’ is kept separate: “Garry likes to keep his business interests separate. Though we do see a few of his groupies/new pop signings drift in and out. It also doubles his ability to do some ‘lady dabbling’.”

Gillian Taylforth says Hall and his character Garry Ryan created a lot of fun while filming. Taylforth plays Jackie, who is married to Roger Webb the manager of Earls Park, but finds herself in to a mischievous situation at the hands of the randy Garry. “Jackie has some interesting scenes with Garry Ryan”, Taylforth says. “Her relationship with Roger is very stable but Garry attempts to try and liven it up!”

The cast also includes Zoe Lucker, Laila Rouass (‘Life Isn’t All Ha Ha Hee Hee’), Helen Latham (‘The Bill’), Gillian Taylforth (‘Eastenders’), Chucky Venice (‘Dream Team’), and special guest star Joan Collins.

To catch the new season of ‘Footballers’ Wives’, on and off the field, watch TV ONE, Fridays at 9.30pm.

Kiwi actress Lucy Lawless will play one of the lead roles in the US adaption of Footballers’ Wives. Lawless has recently appeared on US reality shows and Battlestar Galactica.
