Gavin Stamp’s Orient Express

ARTS CHANNEL – Thursdays from 8 July, 9.15pm

Gavin Stamp, writer and architecture historian, sets off on an epic journey – 2,000 miles across 10 countries – following the route of the old Orient Express. Travelling only by train, wherever possible, he crosses the former Soviet Bloc, visiting countries most of us know very little about and spotlights some of Europe’s most extraordinary architecture along the way. Departing from London on the revived Orient Express service, the journey begins rather luxuriously to Paris, then Gavin transfers on to a connecting train to Vienna to continue the old route. It’s an incident packed trip as Gavin finds out more about the cities he visits before arriving at his destination – Istanbul, at the end of Europe and the beginning of Asia.
