The Hairy Bikers and Jane Moore

Tonight Genius host Dave Gorman is joined by TV food gurus ‘The Hairy Bikers’ and journalist Jane Moore as they explore more ridiculous, but sometimes genius, inventions of the Great British public. Stewart Lee

Comedian Stewart Lee joins host Dave Gorman tonight in the show that searches for ideas with more than a hint of genius about them. The selection in this episode is as bizarre as ever and includes swimming lanes instead of cycling lanes, virtual-reality headsets for chickens, funny faces on car airbags to defuse tension, and Socks Reunited – a website for reuniting lost socks. There can only be one winner though, and the final decision of who will be crowned ‘Genius’ lies with Stewart. One of the inventors will be named the winner and declared genius, taking home the Genius trophy – and an immense sense of self-fulfilment.

Germaine Greer

Australian-born writer, journalist, academic and feminist Germaine Greer joins host Dave Gorman (pictured) as more viewers pitch their ideas for improving humanity tonight. Submissions include fruit machine ATMs, onionade as a drink, female-only votes that redress the balance of history, and randomising the days of the week by lottery. Gorman and Greer discuss, theorise and sometimes road-test the ideas to discover which of the inventors will be crowned winner and declared ‘Genius’ – taking home the Genius trophy and an immense sense of self-fulfilment.

Johnny Vegas

Comedian Johnny Vegas joins host Dave Gorman, as the show that searches for ideas with more than a hint of genius about them continues. Viewers’ submissions in tonight’s episode include dating insurance to ease the pain of break-ups, a torture box for inanimate objects, more fish to make fishing more interesting, two-way ladders you can go down as well as up, and a conveyor duvet for maximum coverage. Gorman and Vegas road-test a prototype for the conveyor duvet (with less than sterling results) and determine the winner of the competition, who will take the coveted Genius trophy home with them.

Series

Jonathan Pryce (Barbarians at the Gate, Pirates of the Caribbean) joins comedian and host Dave Gorman as more viewers pitch their ideas for improving humanity. Tonight’s submissions include shoes with weighing scales built into them for curious weight-watchers, appropriate regional accents added to weather forecasts so that viewers know which bit to listen to, all vegetables being pre-sliced to cut knife crime, 24-hour moisturiser for those who fancy a lie-in, a separate emergency number for hoax calls, and a plan to increase tourism by making the Isle Of Wight symmetrical. Some ideas are more successful than others and Jonathan declares which of the off-the-wall ideas he believes to be ‘Genius’, with the eventual winner taking the coveted trophy – and an enormous sense of self-fulfilment.

Comedian Frank Skinner joins host Dave Gorman tonight as the arbiter of which viewers’ ideas for a better humankind are ‘Genius’. Suggestions include placing prisoners on exercise bikes attached to the national power grid, glow-in-the-dark stalkers, melon-flavoured cucumbers, comb-unders for men who can’t grow a beard, freezer magnets so fridges don’t get all the glory, and dancing maths teachers to encourage greater numbers to study mathematics. Which inventor will be crowned winner and declared ‘Genius’? Frank Skinner must decide.

Series

Imagine a world where gym equipment is hooked up to the national grid, every pavement has pedestrian fast and slow lanes, every aeroplane is fitted with its own, giant parachute, and where there are breathalysers on mobile phones to prevent regrettable calls. From the daft and down-right ridiculous to the hilariously inventive, each episode of Genius sees Dave Gorman and his celebrity guest struggle to make sense of a series of pitches from members of the public arguing very passionately and very seriously for ideas that they think might just change the world (even if they are essentially very silly).

Dave and his guest then have to decide whether the idea is pure genius, or perfectly ludicrous. At the end of each episode the celebrity guest nominates their two favourite contestants and the audience votes as to who should be the overall winner. The show culminates with the winning contributor being crowned the ultimate ‘Genius’, winning an immense sense of self-fulfilment and the legendary Genius trophy. Keeping the ‘special guest’ seat warm this week is award-winning comedian Catherine Tate.
