Tonight the GETAWAY team check out the luxurious cruise ship Queen Victoria, which harks back to the golden age of ocean travel when travelling in style took precedence over the destination. Plus where to go in Australia for the Easter holidays and later Hollywood actor Jake Gyllenhaal talks about some of his travels.
The Queen Victoria is the second largest Cunard Liner ever built and she joins her sister ships, the legendary Queen Elizabeth 2 and Queen Mary 2. For the first time in the company’s 168-year history, the three Cunard Queens are in service together. The latest Queen set out on her inaugural world tour from Southampton in the United Kingdom, and Getaway was privileged to board her for an exclusive preview cruise from Fiji to Auckland before making her Australian debut. The Queen Victoria offers the first museum-at-sea, an internet centre, a conference centre and an impressively stocked two-storey library. The three-tiered Grand Lobby has a sweeping staircase, marble floors, sculptured balconies and touches of gold. There is a casino, cigar lounge, chart room, pub, 830 seat theatre complete with box seats, winter garden, shopping arcade, a glass-domed nightclub and a spa and fitness centre. Afternoon tea is served by white-gloved waiters, a café serves specialty teas, coffees and indulgent pastries.

Tonight the GETAWAY crew visit the South Island’s largest city, Christchurch. Jules visits an Australian town which is fast becoming renowned for its surf and food.

Christchurch is a flat city which makes it ideal for cycling. The city has many purpose-built cycle ways that wind their way through big green parks, pretty gardens and alongside the Avon River that gently meanders through the city centre. Christchurch Bike Tours’ two-hour tours show you what would take at least four hours on foot.

Back in Australia, Jules stops by the small town of Albany which grew around a port on the southern coast of Western Australia. It was the state’s first European settlement and is a popular holiday centre. Its harbours, rivers and estuaries offer fishing and sailing, and beaches and national parks provide lots of amusement options. Albany is quickly becoming a major player in the west’s food and wine stakes, dominated by the beautiful Margaret River area.

Also in tonight’s episode, Ben journey’s into the Amazon jungle; Natalie explores the Gold Coast by walkway and tips on the best Easter getaways on offer in each Australian state.

Tour guides Catriona Rowntree, Ben Dark, Jules Lund, Natalie Gruzlewski, Jason Dundas and Dermott Brereton venture out on short breaks, weekend escapes, trips of a lifetime, overseas jaunts and happy holidays.

Tonight, Dermott Brereton travels to Swakopmund, a city on the Atlantic coast of north-western Namibia. This destination was firmly put on the map when Angelina Jolie gave birth to her daughter while staying there with Brad Pitt. Dermott gets into the swing of things by going quad biking on the massive dunes that surround the city. Jason Dundas hits the racing track at Sandown for a stunt driving course in Melbourne with actors from Underbelly, Nine’s new Australian gangland drama. The guys put the cars through their paces as they relive some of the high-octane moments from the eagerly awaited series. Natalie Gruzlewski climbs aboard a new eco-cruise that takes in the stunning coastline between Port Arthur and Eagle Hawk Neck around the coast of Tasmania. And Catriona Rowntree visits beautiful Boston, one of America’s classiest cities, spending time in its oldest suburb, North End, which is the Little Italy of Massachusetts.
