The return to prime time of Michael J Fox has been short lived after his new show, which has struggled in the ratings, has been pulled by NBC.  The Michael J Fox Show screens on Four here in New Zealand.

Elisabeth Moss has scooped the award for Best Actress in a Mini-Series or TV Movie for her portrayal of troubled detective Robin Griffin in Jane Campion’s Top Of The Lake.

24: Live Another Day to premiere in May

American network Fox have announced a premiere date for 24: Live Another Day, the brand new 12-episode event series that carries on the story of Jack Bauer: the series will get under way with a two-hour premiere on May 6 (NZT). Fox also announced a list of new stars joining the show, including Yvonne Strahovski, who just finished a two-season spot on Dexter. Continue reading »

Awards season is almost upon us as Hollywood gears up to award the best in TV and Motion Picture.  First up are the Golden Globe awards which is important for us as it includes TV categories.  The sad thing, as is often the case with movies, some of these TV shows up for an award haven’t even screened here yet.

emmy2There’s a very interesting article out from the Associate Press this morning about TV networks in the US looking for huge rating winning events like Nik Wallenda’s tightrope walk over the grand canyon.

With ratings for Wallenda’s tightrope walks across Niagara Falls and the Grand Canyon in mind, networks are taking meetings from people pitching programs about cars flipping over, or an attempt to set a record for simultaneous skydives. They’re all on the hunt for the next big event.

Social media and television’s economic system have given rise to a counterintuitive trend: The more opportunities there are for people to watch TV on their own time with DVRs and video on demand, the more valuable programming that can deliver a big live audience has become.

Appointment viewing is where broadcast television has the most opportunity for big ratings and you only have to look at the numbers for the finales for shows like The X Factor NZ, The Block NZ and New Zealand’s Got Talent to see that.

It’s not just stunts. Live sports, awards shows, singing competitions and the Olympics are all examples of programs that networks consider DVR-proof. Continue reading »

gg tinaThe Hollywood Foreign Press Association and NBC are sticking with a good thing, inking deals with Tina Fey  and Amy Poehler to return as hosts of the Golden Globe Awards in 2014 and 2015.

“Tina and Amy are two of the most talented comedic writer/performers in our business and they were a major reason the Golden Globes was the most entertaining awards show of last season,” said NBC’s alternative programming president Paul Telegdy in a statement. “We’re elated they wanted to host together again and that they committed for the next two years.” Continue reading »
