Ice Patrol

LIVING CHANNEL – Sundays from 4 October, 8.30pm

Ice Patrol presents a truly unique opportunity to follow the lives of Royal Navy and British Antarctic Survey personnel on board HMS Endurance during their four month mission to Antarctica. The Red Plum, as Endurance is known to her elite 140 man crew, was specially built to operate in this extremely challenging region. Ice Patrol reveals the real-day-to-day experiences and challenges in the ice, giving viewers a true ‘first hand impression of life on and off board’. The programmes will cover the crew’s training prior to deployment, the preparation for the tasks ahead, their hopes and fears. Will sea sickness, cabin-fever, frost-bite, and daylight all round the clock get the better of them? Once in Antarctica, will they manage to succeed in all their tasks? For some the risk is great, small teams are left for two weeks on an ice mountain to carry out their work. How will they be faring when they are collected? From reports of previous voyages we know to expect the unexpected. Medical emergencies, maritime rescues, unexpected equipment failure, appalling weather and even pirates could come sailing over the horizon.
