In Search of Shakespeare

Starts Monday 19 May at 8.30pm

Acclaimed writer, historian and TV presenter Michael Wood takes television viewers on a fascinating detective trail which brings Shakespeare’s world vividly to life. In Search of Shakespeare investigates the mysterious life of one of the world’s greatest writers, William Shakespeare. The four-part mini series screens on Mondays at 8.30pm on TVNZ Showcase on TVNZ 6.

This intriguing documentary mixes travel, adventure, interviews and specially filmed documentary-style, and live action, sequences of current Royal Shakespeare Company players.
Shakespeare created his memorable characters and plays against a background of momentous social changes, but while much is known about the times, little is known about the man himself.

In Search of Shakespeare explores the mystery of Shakespeare and examines the complex society in which he created some of literature’s most enduring characters.

Using fascinating new evidence from spies’ reports, local archives and even a coded prison diary, Wood uncovers the dark side of Shakespeare’s world. Present day witnesses help him trace Shakespeare’s early days, his schooling, his father’s shady business deals and the dark secret that ruined his family.

Over the course of the series, Wood examines how a young man from Stratford became the star of the London stage and uncovers a tale of religious conflict behind Shakespeare’s lost years.

It charts his rise to fame and fortune in Elizabethan London and reveals how the tragically early death of his son proved to be the catalyst for a major mid-life crisis and surprising behaviour.

Michael Wood is the writer and presenter of many acclaimed historical books, films and television series including Conquistadors and In The Footsteps Of Alexander The Great.
