A home is a refuge; a sanctuary from the world. But what if your home wasn’t protecting you? What if the opposite were true? It’s shocking and almost unthinkable, but Is Your House Killing You? (tonight at 8pm on TV ONE).

The new TV ONE series shows families invited to take up the challenge of ‘detoxing’ their homes. The houses may look clean on the outside, but lurking in corners, carpets, mattresses and wall cavities, lie hidden biological and chemical dangers.

Leading the fight to help families protect their homes and their health is the Is Your House Killing You? experts, Dr Peter Dingle and Cedric Chong. Together, they’ve got the knowledge, the experience and the technology to reveal a hidden world of domestic dangers.

Each week focuses on a different house suffering from a distinct toxin, which could be biological or chemical. A ‘whodunnit’ plot seeks out the causes of the symptoms the houses’ inhabitants are suffering from, with lives changed, and useful, everyday scientific knowledge gained.

Episode one sees the team meet the Hatfield’s. They look like the perfect Queensland family – suntanned, outgoing and always up for a good time – but something is seriously wrong in the family home. Underneath the veneer, all five Hatfield’s are suffering from health conditions that could leave them with anything from respiratory damage to permanent blindness: Could their house be killing them?

Peter Dingle is surprised at how complacent the family is; “You guys have got a long list of quite severe symptoms that I think are extraordinary, and you seem to be putting up with it every single day and just say, ‘oh well, it’s normal’.”

He says the constant illness is a pretty good indicator there is something wrong with the house. Is Your House Killing You? sees the team set about fixing the house problems and helping the Hatfield’s out.
