Set in the Oxfordshire countryside in the 1890s, Lark Rise to Candleford is a love letter to a vanished corner of rural England and a heart-warming drama series teeming with wit, wisdom and romance.

Seen through the eyes of young Laura, the series depicts the relationship between the contrasting communities of the small old-fashioned hamlet Lark Rise and its neighbouring market town Candleford whose residents are eager to embrace the future.

This series sees the arrival of a dashing and elegant stranger in Candleford. Rich, enterprising, worldly and without a wife, James Dowling soon has the Pratt sisters batting their eyelashes in his direction. Where did he come from and what is his business in Candleford? It soon transpires that not only is he the owner of the new Golden Lion Hotel, but he was once a resident of Lark Rise and the Lark Risers are thrilled that ‘Little James’ who ran away to make his fortune has returned.

Now a successful businessman with a string of London hotels, he has come to “transform Candleford and bring new prosperity to this sleeping economic giant of a town”. But not everyone welcomes his entrepreneurial qualities and it isn’t long before he is sparring with the spirited – yet suddenly unusually flustered – Dorcas over the post office refurbishment and aggravating the pride of the male Lark Risers with his superior business acumen and somewhat overbearing manner.

Starring Olivia Hallinan (Sugar Rush, Torchwood), Julia Sawahla (Pride and Prejudice, Absolutely Fabulous), Jason Merrells (Cutting It, Waterloo Road) and Dawn French (The Vicar of Dibley).

Flora Thompson’s trilogy Lark Rise to Candleford is a fictionalised autobiography of her own life seen through the eyes of ‘Laura’. Flora herself left the home of her parents Albert and Emma Timms at the tender age of 14 and worked in several post offices in Southern England, eventually marrying a post office clerk.

UKTV – Wednesdays from 20 May, 8.30pm

Lark Rise to Candleford depicts the last bright flickering of a now-vanished way of life, as Victorian England reaches into the 20th Century.

Rich, funny and emotional, this series follows the relationship of two contrasting communities: Lark Rise, the small hamlet gently holding on to the past and Candleford, the small market town bustling into the future. Seen through the eyes of young Laura, their inhabitants endure many upheavals and struggles as the inevitable change comes; their stories by turn poignant, spirited and uplifting.

And Laura herself must face great change. Taking a job in the Post Office in Candleford, run by the mercurial Dorcas, she turns her back on her childhood hamlet to make her way in the world. With her loyalties divided, she must choose her own path to womanhood…

While Laura’s relationship with Dorcas is the show’s emotional heart, Lark Rise to Candleford draws on a rich ensemble cast for a strong serial element, pointing up the little conflicts, romances and misunderstandings between the tiny Lark Rise and the more-worldly Candleford. Laura feels these tensions through her own very private tug of love, as Dorcas and Laura’s family back home seem to pull her in different directions.

Starring: Olivia Hallinan (Sugar Rush, Torchwood), Julia Sawahla (Pride and Prejudice, Absolutely Fabulous) Dawn French (The Vicar of Dibley, Jam And Jerusalem) and Liz Smith (The Royle Family, Nicholas Nickleby).
