Melissa & Joey

5:00pm Saturday, May 28 on TV2

Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina The Teenage Witch) And Joey Lawrence (Blossom) return to our screens this week in the premiere of TV2’s new comedy Melissa & Joey.

Mel is the grown up former wild child of a political family who is now a politician herself. When her sister winds up in prison and her brother-in-law flees after a scandal hits, Mel must take responsibility for her teenaged niece, Lennox (Taylor Spreitler), and a pre-adolescent nephew, Ryder (Nick Robinson).

With Mel spread thin to manage by herself, help comes in the unlikely form of Joey, who is desperate for a job and moves in to become the family’s ‘manny’.

Audiences can expect some laughs as these two find their feet as ‘parents’.

Hart describes her character as, “a little bit of a basket case, a little bit of a wreck, not someone who has it all together. Someone who thinks she has it all together but really is just falling apart at the seams”.

Hart says the show has a simple format, involving “two people that don’t like each other having to get along,” and is “just a typical old-fashioned sitcom … kind of bringing back the Cheers, Friends, Cosby Show kind of feel.”

Hart says she and Lawrence “have a blast” working together and have known each other since they were four years old.

“We have a great time. We are both professionals. We both want to get the work done,” she says.

“We both have a real sense of comedy, I think, or we help each other out with the jokes, or “try this” or “try that, and there’s no ego. We don’t step on each other’s toes with that, and nobody gets offended.”
